'Highrock Snow'

Another one from Highrock Park. I have done others
of this particular spot before plein air.
However this one was painted in the
warmth of my studio.

'Highrock Solstice'

On Winter's Eve afternoon I painted in a
favourite spot not far from the studio.
It felt good being out painting on that crisp
day as I welcomed the return of the light
and marveled once again at the
natural beauty so close to home.
Two Flickers spent some time observing
my progress sitting just above me
in a young Garry Oak.

'Towhee'

One day last winter while looking for a
sheltered place amongst the trees to
do some plein air painting, I was able to
get a photo of this Rufous-sided Towhee.
I watched as he hunted along the
luxuriously moss covered Garry oak limb.
Nature can provided some startling colour
even on a gray winters day.

'Oaks & Snow'

Well this is quite different... =;-))
This is one of the paintings that will be in my
upcoming show here in Victoria in early Dec.
I hope to do about four in this series
featuring snow covered Garry oak meadows.

'Highrock Blooms',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, G.O.E.R.T., plein air oil painting of southern Vancouver Island)

Happy Earth Day Everyone!
I went up to Highrock for a paint after lunch today and
I'm glad I did. The park is spectacular right now with
the Garry oaks and the Camas in full bloom.
It was quite windy making me grab for
my easel a few times, just in time!
Oil on wood panel 11 x 14.
Thoughts and comments always welcomed!

'Golden Crowned' **SOLD**

Not as common in my area as other sparrows, they
are certainly one of the most striking sparrows to see.
We generally see them during migration and in winter.

'Highrock View' **SOLD**

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Garry oaks, Highrock Park, Esquimalt BC)

I got out for a couple hours about a week ago to paint this.
It's one of my favourite spots up on Highrock and I have
done several paintings in this area of the park. Wonderful
rock formations and distant views it also is a great spot
for birding. The mosses are really starting to
flourish now with the cool wet weather.
Oil on wood panel 6 x 8.

Woodwynn Grandmothers

A group of outsiders where invited to paint at the
historic Woodwynn Farm a couple of weeks ago.
I couldn't resist these two ancient Garry oaks and
the hay fields around them.
These two sisters would have been large mature
trees before contact in this region and have
witnessed much. You can feel their
life force vibrations when you are near to them.
Oil on wood panel 12 x 9.
Comments are always appreciated and encouraged.

Spring in the Oaks

In these very difficult times it can be extremely
challenging for many of us to keep a positive
outlook. Keep in mind that all this negative
energy that surrounds us at this moment will
pass, it will be very painful for many of us,
but it will at some point in the future be a
bad memory. As they say in the song,
"nothin' stays wrong for long..."
On the other hand spring will come just as
it always does the air will warm, you will feel the
suns warmth on your face, in many places
wild flowers will once again bloom, trees will
blossom and if we take the time to notice,
this miracle can fill our hearts with joy.
When things get tough take the time to find
a quite place with a large tree, lean your back
against its trunk and close your eyes, let the
strumming of its life force vibrate your soul
and calm your spirit.
Oil on canvas 14 x11.

Highrock #12

A break in the weather yesterday afternoon saw me
back at Highrock Park. I've become fascinated
with the undulating surface of the moss covered rock
interspersed with the native firs and Garry oaks.
Our relatively mild wet winter weather makes
for perfect moss growing conditions and right
now the moss at Highrock is flourishing.

Winter Morning-Beacon Hill

Another example of Victoria's historic
Beacon Hill parks garry oak ecosystem under a
blanket of snow. This area was once a major food
gathering area for the first peoples of our
region. It is a wonderful thing that it has been saved
from further development for all to enjoy.
When ever I walk among these trees I can't
help but imagine what it must have looked like
here before contact and all that followed.
Oil on board 8 x 10.

High Rock Oak

I painted this piece last week on a crisp clear morning
up on Highrock Park. I was there with three
other artists who are plein air enthusiasts.
It is always amazing to see what everyone comes
up with after a couple hours of painting.

Oil on board 6 x 6.
Your comments are always welcomed.

Work Point Oak

I was out with our group of "Outsiders" again
yesterday, plein aire painters that is.
The weather cooperated wonderfully and some grand
paintings were produced.
We painted at Work Point again as it is such a beautiful
spot and last weeks weather was somewhat
challenging. I think there is still some sleet
embedded in my canvas. =;-))
Oil on canvas 10 x 8.
Your comments are always appreciated.
