Young Maple

I painted Friday with a gang of outsiders on the
south side of the Gorge. We were met with rather dull
and misty weather and very low light levels.
I found the conditions pretty challenging.
But some water, trees, a bit of early fall colour and
something was sparked.
Oil on canvas 10 x 8.

Dyke Point Clouds

Another day of afternoon clouds and another view of
upper Esquimalt Harbour. A little further up from the last one.
I attempted to up the chroma a bit in this piece.
I have been trying to get out painting as often as I can,
our summer is definitely slipping away!

Summer Clouds-Plumper Bay

This is another in the series of paintings I've been doing
of the upper end of Esquimalt Harbour.
It is quite a beautiful place even though development has
taken place here for more than
a hundred years. I could see the clouds building
from my studio window so off I went, and I
wasn't disappointed, they were spectacular.

Sunset on a Rocky Shore *SOLD*

I have painted this particular point of land many times
in the past always trying for different angles and time
of day as well the seasonal differences in the light.
It is a lovely spot that I am actually able to see
from my studio. This view was taken looking to the
South West at sunset. I'm am continually amazed at
the never ending differences in colour and light that
I can see from day to day just in this one spot.

Cattle Point - Oak Bay

Hello everyone,
I have been a bit out of touch lately, (fishin' not wishin')!
This piece was painted this morning on the beach at
Cattle Point, a wonderful small park here in Victoria on the
shore of Oak Bay. It was a grand morning for
painting, clear and calm. The clouds where from my memory
of the ones that came through yesterday.
Oil on canvas 11 x 14.

At long last I must mention that I was honoured with the
"ARTE y PICO AWARD"
The award was given to me by a wonderful artist,
Elizabeth Floyd
Her work regularly provides much inspiration to
the "daily painters community"as whole and me personally.
Having my work recognizied by other artists is an
incredible honour and I want to express my
thanks to Liz!!!
Now, there are of course some rules that go along with this award;
FYI...The Origin of The Arte y Pico Award and Rules if you choose to accept.
You might be interested in the origin of the "Arte y Pico Award"
The designer of the award puts it like this..."The Arte y Pico Award has arisen from
the daily visits that I make to many blogs which nourish and enrich me with creativity.
In them, I see dedication, creativity, care, comradeship,
but mainly, ART, much art. I want to share this prize with all those bloggers
that entertain and enrich me day to day.
Doubtlessly, there are many and it will be hard to pick just a few."
The Rules:
1. You have to pick 5 blogs that you consider deserve this award through creativity,
design, interesting material, and also contributes to the blogger community,
no matter of language.
2. Each award should have the name of the author with a link to their blog.
3. Award winners have to post the award with the name and link to the blog of the person
who gave them the award.
4. Show these rules and the paragraph (above) explaining the awards origination
And so, though those that I pick here will in no way
come close to representing all of the numerous blogs and websites
that I follow and visit as regularly as I can, and which
inspire me as an artist and art blogger, I will
try to pick five... and ask for understanding from those who
may feel that I should have picked them...yikes!

Downtown Morning

Being a tourist town, Victoria really puts on
the colour in the summer with colourful lamppost
banners and of course our world famous
hanging flower baskets. It makes for a wonderful
yet challenging plein air painting experience.
The outsiders decided to go for the hustle and bustle
of one of Victoria's busiest areas for Fridays
paint out, yikes. It was definitely a learning
experience for moi!

'Evening Light - Gordon Bay' **SOLD**

This piece was painted from a photo taken several
years ago from a trail view point on Cowichan Lake.
That wonderful early evening glow that colours
the landscape at that time of day is very special.
My apologies for the quality of this image, it
came out a bit dark near the bottom.

Went for a plein air excursion up island yesterday
and happened upon this lovely spot.
The veiw of Mount Tuam across the water
on Saltspring made for a great backdrop to the
disappearing road. I really enjoyed doing
this one and was able to take in lots
of birding while painting there.

Esquimalt Harbour

Not far from my studio this scene is
one that I have been
wanting to paint for sometime now.
Finally everything came together today
(including a lovely cloud display) and this
plein air effort is the result. It was a
lovely afternoon and as I painted
this piece I wondered what it must have
been like when for the first time large wooden
sailing ships entered this natural harbour
and those souls aboard took it all in.
There will be a larger painting
of this in the
very near future.

Roadside Wild

Commonly found growing wild along the
edges of fields and roadsides, I always find
the striking blue flowers of Chicory to make such
a wonderful contrast to the now dried yellow
grasses and weeds that it grows amongst.
This perennial herb has many uses most notably
its leaves in salads and its tap root
as a caffeine free coffee substitute.

Makin' Hay *SOLD*

I painted this one from a photo I took on a plein air
excursion one evening in June just as haying was getting
under way here on Southern Vancouver Island.
It was a magical evening that I hope to do more
paintings of. There is something about the smell of
fresh cut hay that can put me in a memory time machine
geared to the past, rushing by images in my mind
that I identify with that wonderful unmistakable scent.
It never fails to fill me with a sense of warmth and nostalgia.
Not sure if its possible to capture any of
that in a painting...but I'm hoping.

Limekiln Cove - Esquimalt Harbour

Painted this morning in a lovely little spot half way
up the NE side of Esquimalt Harbour called
Limekiln Cove. Well known to the early sailors of both
the Spanish and British navy's, hence it's
historical significance.
Wonderful light for painting there this morning.
I think I will try doing a larger painting
of this sometime soon.

Esquimalt Lagoon

I painted with the "outsiders" on Friday at the
Esquimalt Lagoon. The lagoon is an amazing geological
formation that is fed from a small opening at its one end
that rushes with sea water going in or out depending
on the tide, as well two fresh water streams flow into it.
It is also a significant bird sanctuary
in our area. Due to its shallowness it is a favoured
feeding area for many types of waterfowl and wading birds
like Great Blue Herons, which can often be seen
wading the shallows in large groups.
As several of us painted we were able to watch a
Belted Kingfisher hoover and dive for small fish.
An amazing display of avian acrobatics.

Your comments would be appreciated.

This is another in a series of arbutus paintings I
have been working on in the studio.

two mingle and flow on the canvas.
Yikes this might be addictive!

July Morning - Ross Bay

Painted today on the beach at Ross Bay. A wonderful

I really tried for quick impressionistic form here and
resisted touching it back at the studio.

Evening at High Oaks

This was painted on a glorious evening the day
after solstice. It was the kind of evening that we dream
about during the winter drearies when summer
seems so far away. This hay field, like many other
neighbouring ones, had been mowed that day and the
scent of freshly cut hay filled the evening air.
Oil on canvas 8 x 10.
I am just now getting this posted as things
continue to be quite hectic around here.
I will be taking part in the "15th Annual Gorge On Art" on
Saturday, July 5th, between 11 am and 4pm.
This annual event takes place along the Gorge Waterway
here in Victoria. Over 45 artist will be set up with their
art along the walkway between Tillicum and Admirals Rd.
You will find me at site #7 at the Admirals Rd.
end of the walkway.
Hope to see you there.

Burnside Hay Fields **SOLD**

I was back at the hay fields again yesterday.
It was our first real summer like day this year and
a perfect time to be there. This piece was painted
from the side, of what turned out to be a fairly busy
thoroughfare, which I found to be very distracting.
I must try to locate myself better before
setting up next time!
The turkey vultures were out in full force. It is truly a
joy to watch them as they glide by
scanning the fields for morsels of food,
left there from the haying activities.
Oil on canvas 6 x 8.

Morning at Madrona (SOLD)

I was able to return to have another go at Madrona Farm
yesterday. We were greeted by wonderful blue skies and
enough clouds to make me happy. We choose to paint
from the upper side of the farm looking down and across to
the Sooke Hills and the start of the Malahat.
Patterns of different coloured crops in the sloping
fields combined with the vanishing perspective
made for a challenging exercise.
Oil on canvas 6 x 8.

Madrona Hay Field *SOLD*

Our plein aire gang was at it again yesterday.
We were invited to paint at a
heritage organic farm
that is nestled against the south west
shoulder of Mount Douglas in Victoria.
It is a superb place to paint
far above the hubbub of urban life that
whizzes along below this bucolic jewel.
Families of quail could be heard calling
to each other and seen scurrying about,
somewhat disturbed by these intruders
Goldfinches, swallows and many others
were busy as we painted.
Some of the outsiders will return
early next week for another go.
I hope to be there too.

December Evening - Fisgard *SOLD*

This is another one from a series of lighthouse pieces I did
this past winter. I have since worked this into a
larger painting. Fisgard Light depicted here is the
oldest on Canada's west coast. Sitting at the mouth

Beach Shadows

A little piece of paradise. Finding yourself in such a
spot for a short time is so wonderful for the
soul. The quiet, disturbed only by the sounds of
nature going about her business.
The tide will change, time moves on, so be still,
close your eyes, smell and listen
before the moment passes.

Maple Shadows

Painting in the presence of majestic maples
is a spiritual experience for me. The grandmother
tree in this painting is many hundreds of years old.
Oh the stories she could tell, if only...so while painting,
my imagination weaves some wonderful tales
of this forest long ago.
A group of "outsiders" painted at the foot of
Mount Douglas yesterday, the weather was
unusually pleasant to say the least!
Another spot that is a must to revisit.

Island Shore

The tidal shoreline with its many intricate patterns
provides endless opportunities for painting.
It is always changing, tides, wind, light all
combine to provide a different image but at the same
time holding on to something recognizable.

visiting Saltspring Island recently.
