'Island Sunset',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Port Renfrew, Botany Bay)

This piece is a culmination of the theme of several of
the larger canvases I have completed recently.
I must say it has been very satisfying to work through
this series. Time to move on to something else for a bit.
Gotta get back amongst the oaks!

'Spring Dance',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Garry oak meadows, Garry Oak Ecosystems Recovery Team, spring

I painted this piece on what turned out to be a very cool
late afternoon a couple of weeks ago. The deal was to get
it done quickly so we allowed ourselves 45 minutes or less.
My main goal was to try and capture the light and colour
patterns that surrounded us at that time and not worry
to much about fine details. I'm pleased with the
results overall, course my desire for more fine details
nags at me a little. Once again the character of these
Garry oaks lead me to title the piece this way.
The Garry oak meadow that I painted in has the first
of the early wildflowers and naturalized invaders in bloom
already which is a bit early this year.
The incredible flush of the native Camas Lily
will not be to far off.
Oil on board 6 x 6.

'Chestnut-backed Chickadee",

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Chickadee oil painting)

Familiar to almost everyone in North America, there are
many different sub-species of Chickadees. This variety
is common in the Pacific North-west.
Oil on wood panel 9 x 12.
Your thoughts and comments are very much appreciated.

'Harlequin'

Harlequin ducks are strictly sea ducks found inland only
during nesting season where they can be seen in close
proximity to fast moving turbulent mountain streams here
on the west coast. Both coasts of North America have
populations and are usually sited close to rocky shorelines.
They seem total at home in very rough water and go about
their business with breaking surf going right over them
as they dive for food among the rocks and kelp beds.
The drakes are one of North Americas
most strikingly coloured sea birds.

'Winter Surf',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Port Renfrew, winter surfing)

Another studio piece from my Port Renfrew trip.
These two wet suit clad fun seekers were among
the twenty or so out catching waves
in the sparkling surf.
I love to paint light and this piece really
provided a wonderful outlet for that.

This is the larger version of a plein air painting I did

'Golden Crowned' **SOLD**

Not as common in my area as other sparrows, they
are certainly one of the most striking sparrows to see.
We generally see them during migration and in winter.

'Botany Bay Magic' **SOLD**

Canadian west coast Impressionism, Port Renfrew BC, Botanical Beach oil painting

I painted at Botany Bay on Saturday which is part of
Botanical Beach park just outside the west coast town
of Port Renfrew. From here the open Pacific can be seen,
the entrance to the strait Juan de Fuca and Washington's
Cape Flattery. Although the day could not have been
better, with clear sunny skies and shirtsleeve temperatures
out of the wind, the power of the Pacific was quite evident
when the huge swells rolled in and broke roaring on to the
jagged shale shoreline. An incredible magical day.
A return trip is in the works!

'South of Sombrio', **SOLD**

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, French Beach, Sombrio Beach, paintings of Vancouver Island)

This is one of the larger pieces I have been
working on lately. Another view of French Beach which
is one of the several well known beaches that line
the coast of Vancouver Island northwest of Victoria.
One of the things that make a stone or pebble beach so
wonderful is the almost musical rattle and
clatter that happens as the waves recede from
the beach causing the stones to roll and tumble hitting
against one another. As well, you don't get
any sand in your shoes!! =;-))
(My apologies for the quality of this photo. I will try
again when this one is drier.)

'West Coast Wanderer',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, French Beach oil painting, rain forest, Victoria BC)

Canada's west coast with it's mountainous rain forest
terrain and the logging and storms that take place here
have produced many floating giants over the years.
Those logs and uprooted trees that find their way into the
sea are carried by wind and tide back and fourth along
the shoreline, some traveling for years and miles until
firmly beached or becoming so water logged
that they eventually sink.
The majestic cedar in this piece was washed into the sea
roots and all and finally came to rest on French Beach
about 60 km west of Victoria, from where
she came no one knows.
Oil on canvas 12 x 16.

'First Light-Oak Bay',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Oak Bay, southern Vancouver Island, oil painting)

This is my second go at this painting. It was
developed from a smaller plein air piece last
spring. However I was never quite happy with
how it turned out. Well today I put it up on my easel
and tried to figure out what it needed and
I think I may have done it this time.
Course who knows what I may think in
couple of days or weeks or...hmmm!

I'm also trying to keep the foreground quite simple
and loose but interesting.

'After the Storm',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, surfing Jordan River, French Beach, Vancouver Island)

Our area had a number of wind and rain storms
over several days recently. Once the weather
settled down I made a short trip to Jordan River.
This is a well known surfing area about 70km
north of Victoria along the west side of the
island. There were some surfers out on the waves,
(no I wasn't one of them),
however that wasn't the reason I was there.
I took quite a few reference photo's of the waves
breaking on the beach but due to the strong
winds in that spot we backtracked to
the somewhat protected French Beach
set up our easels and got to it.
It was getting almost dark by the time
we packed up, but what a wonderful spot.
Oil on wood panel 11 x 14.

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, autumn skies, fall colour)

As I have mentioned before I really love painting clouds
and this studio piece was no exception.
Partly photo reference and part memory/imagination
I tried to capture that wonder and magic of
early evening in the late fall.

'Highrock Contours" *SOLD*

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Highrock Park, Esquimalt BC, Garry Oak Ecosystems Recovery Team)

I was able to get out for a quick paint last Sunday at
Highrock park once again. As you can see we had a very
cool cloudy day, something I find very challenging to paint.
The lovely rounded rock contours covered with a coat of
winter moss and the dancing Garry oaks
grabbed my attention this day.

'Winter Walk',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, winter, snow, southern Vancouver Island)

Winter on southern Vancouver Island often
happens without snow, (seldom without lots of
rain), but we do get real winter
from time to time. When that happens I do
my best to re-supply my 'winter' reference
photo library. This piece was painted using a
photo I took after a January snow
storm back in 2007.
Oil on canvas 16 x 20.

'Winter Mallards',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, mallards, winter marsh)

Waterfowl are adaptable and hardy and seem to quite enjoy
those areas of ice cold weather can create. Nothing can
out do the colour of sunlit Mallard drakes on a crisp
winter afternoon. Truly one of natures
most colourful visual delights.

'Fishin' not Wishin', **SOLD**

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Belted Kingfisher, bird watching)

Amazing birds to observe doing their thing the
Belted Kingfisher is also a strikingly beautiful bird.
Equally at home in ponds and lakes they are also very
comfortable fishing in the ocean shoreline. Here on
Vancouver Island I get to watch them in both
salt and freshwater environments.
