A Moment Like This

'A moment like this
the sea has gone silent
the world seems to stop
every second counts

A moment like this
cast in golden light
sounds are soft in the stillness
here on the very edge

A moment like this
can’t last so very long
it will fade with the light
only memories will remain

A moment like this
touches our soul
it fills the senses
makes us breathe deeply

A moment like this'

'Low Tide at Moonrise'

Another in my nocturne series.
I'm really having some fun with them.
It feels something like swimming
in a new lake.

'Highrock Sky'

This one is from a few weeks ago that
goes to show you never know what your
going to find when you head out.
This cloud formation started to form
as I was walking about to get
my chosen spot for this
early evening paint.
Another one in this years crop of Camas.

'From a cliff high up on the Malahat
looking north to the Gulf Islands.
While painting this piece
 it was easy to see this wonderful area
as a paradise worthy of
our reverence and protection...'

'Mitchell's Lookout'

Pretty wet out on the painting grounds yesterday.
But I waited for a brief window between
the bands of showers...
with a nice sunny break at the end.
Here on the south Island, April's cloud show
has not disappointed, with daily
extravaganzas in the spring sky.
Oh to have the energy to paint and capture
everyone of them, throughout everyday.

A quick one this morning hoping to see some
Swallows and sure enough flying high
working the sky above Swan Lake
(probably Tree Swallows).

'Morning at Island Cove'

Wonderful morning painting yesterday. The Fawn lillies were
 out along the trails along with a few Wild Onions and Camas.
 A nuthatch was busy excavating a nesting cavity
 just a few feet away from my painting spot.
Otters and seals were feeding just below me
along with geese, swans and diving ducks.
Just as I was getting near the finish
the fog rolled in,
very thickly...

'Morning Clouds Royal Roads'

I painted this the other day out on the
Coburg Peninsula. It was a pretty cool
morning after the many milder ones we've
been enjoying lately.

'Waiting for the Swallows'

Here on the southern tip of Vancouver Island
we are experiencing one the strangest
winters. Spring is here like it was
 late March already. However this
weather pattern is heading us toward a
severe wild fire season this year.
But for right now painting on a lovely
morning in this local marsh was
way past splendid!!
Mallards, Green-wings and Canada's were
working the shallow bog pools
like they meant it.
The sun felt good, real good...

'Lisa Jane'
1955 - 2015

The mysterious universe that we are born into
never gives up her secrets easily.
There are of course certain truths that
reveal themselves to those who care to see.
Our time here is but a tear drop
in the Great Salish Sea.
Some are born with challenges that make
the understanding of fair
impossible to comprehend.
They go through life swimming against
unrelenting tides, defying the odds.
They are stars that shine in our lives that
no cloud can obscure.
When they 'walk on' another bright star will
shine down on the earth and
the mystery will continue unabated.
"To love and be loved in return"
as Nat sang, is a marvelous truth.
All things of course are relative as they say.
Still there seems no greater pursuit than
those things that can go with us when
 our time to walk on is here.
It is the things we share
in our heart, mind and soul
with those we love and touch with
thoughtfulness, kindness and acceptance
that will travel with us on the next journey.
They are the riches we leave behind to
soothe the grief of those who care.
Another truth, is at times in life words just
don't seem to be enough.
But in life it is the trying and the caring
that really seem to matter...
I believe my sister truly understood this
and it was one of the many things
that made her so easy to love.
Love you sis, shine on.

November Lowlands

This was painted last November just as the last
of the colour was about to be blown free
by the fall winds.
One of the many wonderful things about
painting plein air is how immediately you
find yourself standing in the spot you painted,
the moment you look at your painting.
No matter how long ago that might be...

'Winter Sun Scia'new'
oil on wood panel
8 x 10
~~~~~~~~~~
A beautiful morning in the ancient lands
of Scia'new (''the place of the big fish,") today...
The Scia'new First Nations trace their ancestry
to people who spoke four different languages.
The community recognizes all four languages
although they are not all currently spoken.
The predominant language is now Hul’q’umi’num
It is for me the the most preciously beautiful
of all the areas in the south Island.
I have spent many hours and days
salmon fishing in these waters,
but it will never be as
often as I wished...
This past November we had some very high
tides during the day. When combined with
some gusty winds and partially clearing
skies provided some amazing
reference shots for some
sheltered studio work...
'NIGHT WISHES'
When you look way up at the stars
Shining on a winters night
The brightest ones always are
Those that have been wished on
That's why they burn so bright
So when you gaze up at the stars
Maybe even tonight
Remember the brightest that you see
May be because of you or me
'Samhain Afternoon'
'Samhain Afternoon'
oil on wood panel
6 x 8
~~~~~~~
Since the ancients walked the earth
we celebrate this time
halfway between the summer and winter solstice...

"May the energies be reversed:
From darkness, light!
From bane, good!
From death, birth!
"
(an excerpt from an ancient Samhain chant)

This piece was painted on the ancient shores
of Thetis Cove during the afternoon of
Samhain several weeks ago now.
