Summer Heat - Cowichan

There are places we have the fortune to
experience that burn a memory on our soul
a place where you feel the heartbeat of
the old ones who first breathed this air
and who's stardust still mingles with the scent
of pine and fir in the hot summer air...

'Shoreline Willow'

A fairly complex subject for a small plein air piece.
But as usual I tend to try and get it all in there.
The shallow rocky shoreline, dappled with pure light,
varying shades of shadow and reflected sky colour.
Move back from your monitor it'll make better sense.
Oil on wood panel 6 x 8.
Comments always encouraged & appreciated!

'Cowichan Shore'

As I mentioned in my last post I came back from
Cowichan Lake with two paintings. This study of
overhanging backlit Alder limbs with that summer
sparkling water was the first of the day. It was perhaps
a little complex for the first one and me
standing on a secluded natural beach with that cool
clear Cowichan Lake water lapping at the stony shore,
and me not even having my first swim yet...yikes!

'View from Waxwing Point'

Last week I made a day trip up to Cowichan Lake about
an hour and a half north west of Victoria. I must say
it was a stellar day, warm and very quiet, almost like
we had the lake to ourselves. We spent the day at a spot
about 15 minute boat ride from the launch ramp I call
Waxwing Point, mainly because I have never been there
and not had many beautiful Cedar Waxwings
feeding and flying about. The views from the point
as well back in the trees along the creek bank offer
many painting opportunities, this piece was one
of two I did that day. Ah, painting, birding
and lake swimming, can it be better than that?
Oil on wood panel 9 x 12.

Cowichan Lake Summer

When ever I think of Cowichan Lake in the
summer time, this is the spot that usually I
see in my minds eye.
If you like lake swimming
in the heat of high summer it doesn't get
better than this little cove.
This is yet another example of the
wonderful variations in colour
that show up in this lakes water.
