'Autumn Snowfall',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, early snowfall, oil paintings of southern Vancouver Island)

Last light on an early snowfall can provide
some dramatic light and colour.
I'm remembering (once again) just
how addictive painting snow can be, yikes!
=;-))

'Fisgard Calm'

Snow is falling here on the south Island as I write this
and though it is a magical winter wonderland it
does create havoc for we Islanders.
(even those displaced from the great white north
very much east of here)
It is supposed to change to rain later this afternoon
and will all be washed away =:-(
Painted from a photo taken while painting en plein air
last summer, this will be the final one to be ready for my
show next week 'South Island Impressions'.
I hope to use this painting as a practice
run for a much larger painting.

'Woodland Waterfall'

This another painting for my up coming show
on Thurs. Dec 02 at
The Gallery
in the Oak Bay Village
The show opens on the gallery walk night
in the Oak Bay Village
6 pm - 9 pm
I will be there and hope you can make it out.
I took the reference
photo on a plein air excursion to the, now
protected, Sooke Potholes. This stream
feeds into the Sooke River and was
quite a sight that day in late October.
Oil on wood panel 8 x 6.
Your thoughts & comments are always
greatly appreciated!

'Winter Evening Oaks'

This piece was painted from a photo taken
after a heavy snowfall two years ago here
in Victoria. Although we don't like to admit it
we do get snow here on the south Island from
time to time. There is snow in our
weekend forecast!

'Autumn on the River'

Hi everyone,
Well I'm back on the river once again so to
speak. This is the largest so far in the series.
This format allowed me to include more detail which helped
to show the drop in elevation as the water starts it's
rush to the head of the falls at the viewers left.
In the years I have been on southern Vancouver Island
my time on the water has largely been on the sea and
some of our inland lakes. However this series has made me
realize how much I've been missing and I'm planning
future painting excursions to this and other
rivers here on the south Island.

'October Sky-Highrock' #32

I painted this one late afternoon several weeks ago.
Artist Linny D. Vine and I were hoping to get
some early evening sky drama to paint as a new
front approached. While it didn't develop as I
had hoped it did provide some interesting
patterns and light. We needed to paint
fairly quickly due to the failing light.
Oil on wood panel 6 x 8.

'River Gold'

This is another in my river series I have been working
on lately. I've been really enjoying it and will keep
ridin' this one till at least the bell rings...
=;-))
I usually grow tired of a repeated theme quickly but
for what ever reason not this one, so far.

'One October Morning' *SOLD*

This was painted a couple of weeks ago on a
beautiful October morning on Victoria's waterfront.
I was able to make it out early enough to
catch some interesting light and colour.
This spot is above Holland Point looking south across
the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Washington's
Olympic Mountains.

'South Island Spring',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, oil painting of Uplands Park, Victoria BC

While I know it is a little out of season we artist have to
strike when the metals hot so to speak!
=:-/
This was developed using plein air paintings and reference
photos from my several forays into Uplands Park this
spring during the flowering season.
I was very fortunate to enjoy several paint outs among
the lush spring Camas and have a few paintings as well.
Stay tuned for more autumn scenes!

'Autumn on the Cowichan'

This was started as a demo I was invited to do for a
wonderful group of local artists last week.
Using my plein air rig I attempted to give a close
idea as to how I would approach painting this scene en plein
air only in this situation using a photo.
=:-/
As I had recently done a painting of this size en plein air
only a few feet from where the reference photo was taken
it helped me to keep it as real as possible (sort of).
Oil on wood panel 11 x 14.
I invite your thoughts & comments!

'Cheakamus September'

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This painting was created using reference photos taken
while on a recent plein air painting adventure up near
Whistler BC. I really had a lot of fun with this piece and
really got it goin' with the water. Unfortunately this
photo doesn't really show all the juicy brush work
so another will have to be taken!
'Above Skutz Falls'
As the title suggests this painting was painted just above
Skutz Falls on the Cowichan River during a magical
afternoon with bright sunlight highlighting the early fall
colour. The Cowichan river is one of the most important
rivers on Vancouver Island for spawning salmon and
very depleted steelhead. As well resident populations of
rainbow, cutthroat and brown trout. It has for millennia,
and continues to be, a central part of the lives and culture
of some of the islands first peoples. To say it
is a beautiful river is very much an understatement.
It is wonderful feeling to be able to spend time
painting it and to sense the spirits that still
occupy this vital watershed.
'September on the Cheakamus'
Finally had a chance for a quick visit up
to Whistler last week to see my oldest son.
Fortunately the weather was nice on the
way up so we stopped for lunch and a paint
out. The Cheakamus River is a beautiful piece
of water as it tumbles down from the high country.
This spot was easily accessible for us and I
took quite a few reference photo's as well for
some future large canvases.
Oil on wood panel 12 x 9.
As always your thoughts & comments are valued.
'Rising Wind'
This piece was worked up from a plein air piece I did
last year. The morning started out flat calm and sunny
and after painting for about 20 minutes I decided I
really needed some sun screen on, however not long
after that it was, hurry and get it done before
we got wet and blown away.
Oil on canvas 24 x 30.
As always I invite your thoughts & comments!
'Westerlies at Sunset'
This painting is an expansion of a piece I painted a
month ago. The larger format gave me a sense of
freedom with my brush and so I went with it.
The 'westerlies' referred to here is that wind that happens
commonly in our area from afternoon to evening when the
heat in the interior of the province rises and creates a
sort of vacuum drawing in the air from the coast,
usually in westerly winds.
Oil on canvas 30 x 40.
Your thoughts and comments are always valued.
'Changing Weather'
As I mentioned in my last post my second recent
evening excursion was made just as a weather front
was arriving in our area and the drama of colour and
atmospheric interest was quite fantastic. However
I had to move along with my painting, even so it
was almost dark by the time I was back at the vehicle.
Oil on wood panel 6 x 8.
Thoughts & comments always welcomed.
I have included some photo's below showing some
of the action that evening.
'Late Summer-Highrock'
Oh yes the the time is late and seems to quicken with
the passing days. At times the melancholies are hard
to shake with summers passing. I went painting on two
evenings recently and was rewarded with wonderful
painting opportunities on both excursions.
A weather front was approaching and change was in the
air, it arrived last night and summer almost seems
like a distant memory already!
'Shoreline Willow'
A fairly complex subject for a small plein air piece.
But as usual I tend to try and get it all in there.
The shallow rocky shoreline, dappled with pure light,
varying shades of shadow and reflected sky colour.
Move back from your monitor it'll make better sense.
Oil on wood panel 6 x 8.
Comments always encouraged & appreciated!
'The Gallery'
Last Wednesday I was part of an evening
'paint - in' at the The Gallery in the
Oak Bay Village, which is one of the galleries
currently representing my work. Both myself
and well know local artist Linny D. Vine
took part in the evenings event.
The event was part of the larger
Oak Bay Village Summer Night Market,
as well it was the opening night of
Linny's show 'Life Is Good'
