I've been somewhat missing-in-action in the
and last minute preparations seem to mount.
All the paintings were delivered to the
Art Gallery of Greater Victoria yesterday
and that felt real gooooood.

I have been painting though, if somewhat
distractedly.
This painting features those wonderful west coast
trees the Arbutus. Though the mighty cedars
and firs are regaled as the trees of the
west coast it is the Arbutus that holds sway
with my soul. Feminine and sensual in
character they are sacred to many of
the first peoples here on the south coast.
When you breathe in the scent of their profuse blossoms,
see the bountiful bright red clusters of their
edible berries among the leathery evergreen leaves

or sit quietly on a hot still mid summer afternoon and
hear the thin layers of bark begin to audibly crack
and peel from the smooth trunks,
you begin to understand...
