'Highrock View',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Garry oaks, Highrock Park, Esquimalt BC)

I got out for a couple hours about a week ago to paint this.
It's one of my favourite spots up on Highrock and I have
done several paintings in this area of the park. Wonderful
rock formations and distant views it also is a great spot
for birding. The mosses are really starting to
flourish now with the cool wet weather.
Oil on wood panel 6 x 8.

'September at the Lake',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, September light, southern Vancouver Island

Another one in my September light series...
How can September seem so long ago already =;(
As we go into the dark months I'm happy to have
images of these paintings to light things up a bit.
This is one of the pieces that will be featured in my
upcoming show at the No. 5 Gallery next week.
I'll post more details about the show later.
Oil on canvas 16 x 20.

'October Colour',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, fall colours, Uplands Park, Victoria, BC, plein air oil painting)

I painted this piece en plein air about a week ago and
managed to get most of it done before the rain started.
I have been enjoying painting the coloured trees against
the dark autumn skies. I think it adds a bit of drama.
However I did find it a bit of a challenge to get the colours
right in the very low light conditions.
Oil on wood panel 11 x 14.

'Good Morning Burgoyne Bay',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Saltspring Island, Burgoyne Bay, spirits)

This painting was developed from reference photo's I
took while having a picnic lunch here last May. It
was very still and calm, almost as though we were the
only ones there. At our backs Mount Maxwell's cliffs rise
to their dizzying heights creating warm updrafts which
many turkey vultures and swallows were utilizing. As we
sat there scanning our surroundings and breathing in the
briny scents of low tide I could feel the presence of the
spirits that surely spend their eternity here.

Oil on canvas 36 x 48.
Your thoughts and comments are always a pleasure!

'October-Cattle Point',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Cattle Point, Oak Bay, fall colour, flu)

I managed to make it out on Wednesday this week for a
quick paint at Cattle Point on Oak Bay. I say quick because
after about 45 min. the wind and rain came up and had me
scurring to the vehicle, not quite quick enough however!
I have been battling a flu for the last week or so as well
as the weather which has been very unsettled,
very much like my illness,
lousy one day not bad the next. I'm really looking forward
to more of one and less of the other =;-))
(whine ...whine...whine...)
Oil on board 6 x 8.

'Morning Sky-Fisgard Light', **SOLD**

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Fisgard Light, Esquimalt Harbour)

All of our old light stations throughout Canada seem
to evoke a sense of nostalgia for a by-gone era.
Though those times are gone many of the old lights still
do what they have always done, help to keep mariners safe.
Fisgard Light is the oldest on Canada's west coast. She first
showed light at sunset on November 16, 1860. Now
an designated historic site and museum, she has been
under going a complete refit this summer.
Still watching over the entrance to Esquimalt harbour it
was automated many years ago, her white or red beacon and
fog horn are a feature in Victoria's waters.
I can hear her signal now on this foggy autumn evening.
Oil on canvas 12 x 16.

One of the joys of walking the trail
into the lake are scenes like this.
Light breaking through the trees and
filling the path ahead with white light.

'Saanich Farm',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Saanich farm plein air oil painting)

This painting really highlights the changing season here
on the south island. I joined a couple of my plein air pals
late one morning a couple of weeks ago to paint this piece.
Though the day was crisp and clear I felt the addition of
the clouds added a bit of drama to the composition.

'West Coast Treasures',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, McNeill Bay, plein air oil painting

The title for this piece was chosen for its ambiguity.
I painted this on a glorious afternoon last week. This spot
is on the north side of McNeill Bay on Victoria's
beautiful waterfront. A very gentle soul soothing
place the beach leads out to a rocky island that is
accessible in most tides and across a narrow channel lies
the historic Trial Island light and beyond that
the Olympic Mountains across the strait.
Due to the very fast tides that swirl through this area
loads of flotsam are strewn in drifts along the
stone pebble beach. All of these treasures in their
own right, but all together, a real
west coast beach combers bonanza!
Oil on wood panel 14 x 11.

And light has no weight,
Yet one is lifted on its flood,
Swept high,
Running up white-golden light-shafts,
As if one was as weightless as light itself,
All gold and white and light.

'Autumn - Esquimalt Lagoon'

(cutthroat trout, plein air, Canadian west coast Impressionism)

On Friday morning our group of plein air painters
concentrated their efforts near the mouth of the Esquimalt
Lagoon. It is a beautiful spot with the beach contours
changing with the tide. The area is a significant bird refuge
here on southern Vancouver Island as well, a small stream
that feeds into the upper end of the lagoon is used by
sea-run cutthroat trout for spawning.
This is a special time up here in the Great White North,
we celebrate Thanksgiving this weekend.
So happy Thanksgiving!

'September Glow',

(Arbutus, Vancouver Island, Thetis Lake)

More of that lovely September light with this piece.
Some of our native Arbutus trees back lit with
warm afternoon sun. The Arbutus is another of
our trees that is found only in very few places
in the world. A broadleaved evergreen, they take on
very unusual growth patterns of twisting trunks,
not unlike Garry oaks in that. The smooth trunks
shed their bark in curling flakes yearly, turning
from a russet red-orange to a creamy yellow-green.
Sometime in August if you happen to be near
one on a real hot day you can hear the bark crackle
as it splits and peels away from the main trunk.
They produce lovely panicles of creamy white
flowers in late spring, so profusely at times
that the glossy dark green leaves are almost
hidden. They will be followed later
by clusters of red berries.
Oil on canvas 9 x 12.

'Views of the Park'

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Beacon Hill Park, Victoria, BC)

This painting is the second one I did on Friday morning.
This is unusual for me but when things go well ,
keep'er goin', eh!
This ominous looking cloud formation started to form
behind me as I was finishing my first of the morning so I
turned my easel around grabbed a larger
panel and went to work.
Wish it worked like this a little more often!
An hour later the sun was out again and the rest of
day had skies filled with painters clouds.

(Beacon Hill Park, plein air oil painting, west coast Impressionism

A beautiful fall morning met our gang of outsiders this
morning at Beacon Hill park. Looking south to the Olympic
Peninsula and the Strait of Juan de Fuca I attempted
to capture the early morning light with the fantastic
clouds and early fall colours that are just
getting started here in Victoria.

'September Light',

(lake swimming, Canadian west coast Impressionism, light)

This scene exemplifies what a glorious time September
can be here on the south island. It is what greeted us after
we hiked in for what we thought might be our last
swim of the year, we were almost right but not quite...
=;-))
I think the light in September is the best of the
year for my area of the world.

'Michell's Farm'

plein air oil painting, Canadian west coast Impressionism, Saanich Peninsula, fruit & vegetables

The Michell farm is one of the older ones on the
Saanich Peninsula. The family home sits high on a ridge
above the valley featured in this piece. Many of the
vegetable fields in this painting are part of their large fruit
and vegetable operation. Once again this year our
non-group group (the Victoria Al frescoes)
was granted permission to range over
the farm and paint. This one was painted from the entrance
to their driveway. That's garlic in the very foreground as
well in the distance, fields of corn, cabbage
and big orange pumpkins.

H&C - Government Street

I painted downtown this morning in part of Victoria's
old town district. This particular building is one of the
beauties of early 20th century architecture that this city is
known for. The Downtown Victoria Business Association
invited local artist to participate in a plein air painting
event 'Local Colour' that will see the artist work in a
group show on a date to be announced sometime in
October. This building has seen many businesses take up
residence over the years, it is now home to a fantastic
hemp and natural fiber clothing store, Hemp & Co.
They also carry tote bags which are being used to
support and promote the work of the
These great bags are 100% recycled cotton and
have an imprint of one of two of my paintings on one side
and the GOERT logo on the other. A percentage of each
sale goes directly to help fund GOERT's projects.

marine oil painting, Saxe Point, Canadian west coast Impressionism

Another cloud painting from that series of photo's
I took last March. This one is part of the formation that

before dark from my studio. I hope to develop this
piece into a larger one sometime soon.

'September Morning', plein air oil painting, Canadian west coast Impressionism, Island Veiw Beach

I painted with a non-group of plein air enthusiasts Friday
morning on the Saanich Peninsula's Island View Beach.
It was lovely warm morning with a low tide and a wonderful
sky and only a light breeze. I arrived fairly early and
was hoping to capture the feel of a morning in early fall
with this piece. This is a very popular spot among
our local bird watching community.

'Saxe Point Beach', plein air oil Saxe Point Park,

I was back painting at Saxe Point again this afternoon
and came back with this beach study. We continue
to luxuriate in outstanding September weather here on
the south island and I'm trying to get out as much as I can.
As always the real thing tends to look better
then the image on the monitor. I encourage you to
pull back from the screen and take another look.
I'll try another photo when the painting is dry.

'Evening Ferry' plein air oil Fulford Harbour

I painted this piece from the lookout high on top of
Saltspring Island's Mount Maxwell. We got set up late in the
afternoon and I have to say it was some kind of wonderful!!
This view is looking to the south east and Washington State.
For the most part while we were there it was just us
sharing the view and the scent of soul syrup with the
ravens and the turkey vultures that soared on the updrafts
of the steep cliff face below us, sometimes so close we
could hear the air rushing through their wings!
Can't wait to paint there again!

'The Gap-Thetis Island', Gulf Islands oil painting low tide

Hello everyone,
Well I just got back last night from a short trip to a
neighbouring island and it was really grand.
I did do some painting while I was there and I
will be posting them in the days to come.
This painting was done a couple of months ago from
photo references I took while staying on Thetis Island
several years ago. The "Gap" at one time was merely
an impediment at the highest tides and so travel between
Kupers and Thetis Islands was quite easy on foot.
I think at one time there was even a small bridge
for vehicles to negotiate the narrowest part.
For reasons that are, shall we say, somewhat obscure
it was dredged for "navigation", the bridge no longer
exists. I will leave the real history for others to
write about in another forum.
It is a very magical place at the lowest tides
as depicted here one early morning in late May.
I'm sure there are many stories about this natural
area that had human footprints for
thousands of years before first contact.
Oil on canvas 30 x 36.

Early Morning-Saxe Point

Hi everyone,
I was back painting at Saxe Point park early Friday morning.
I choose this perspective to try and capture the wonderful
sky above the distant shore and the Olympic mountains.
At this time of year there is a special quality of light that
is very unique to late summer/early fall here on the
south island and one I am trying to paint.

Spring Afternoon

This piece was painted way back in early May of this
year on one of those glorious spring afternoons when the feel
of warm air and sun on your face feels so brand new.
The camas lilies and Garry oaks where in bloom and
the pleasure of painting en plein without
the chill of winter was so special.
