Of Mist & Sea

As we start the transition from summer to fall
here on southern Vancouver Island,
some misty mornings will surely
come our way from time to time.
The Oystercatchers seem not to mind
the increased solitude...

One West Coast Evening

There are some very special places not far from here.
Scenes that burn into your memory so
that they become more than just
rock, sky and water.
Botany Bay is one such place,
for me...

A Moment Like This

'A moment like this
the sea has gone silent
the world seems to stop
every second counts

A moment like this
cast in golden light
sounds are soft in the stillness
here on the very edge

A moment like this
can’t last so very long
it will fade with the light
only memories will remain

A moment like this
touches our soul
it fills the senses
makes us breathe deeply

A moment like this'

'October Surf'

Early morning in late October
on Chesterman Beach near Tofino is
such an amazing experince when the tide is rising
and making spectacular surf.
This piece was painted using reference
photos taken while on a plein air
adventure a couple of years ago...

'Tonquin Light'

Though it can be said that each geographic
area has its own special light,
none more so than here on the coast.
Attempting to capture the light with
a rapidly advancing weather system bearing
down on your location is always challenging.
Often we are forced to "play"
a little with reality.
Using both a small plein air piece
and photo's taken while painting it I
"played" with this piece
within the confines of the studio
and reality.

'West Coast Magic'

Another version of this scene of a late October
memory from a west coast painting
adventure several years ago. I seem
to want to try it again and again...

'The Rugged Coast'

Watching the incredible force of these Pacific
swells being thrown skyward by these
coastal ramparts is a thrilling
experience.
The knowledge that there are many animals
and birds that call this ecosystem home
makes you aware just how tenuous
our hold is to mother earth.

'South Chesterman Sunrise'

Sometimes a scene so endears its self to you
that once is not enough. This is my
third attempt at this scene ...
(Is he done with it yet?  You might ask )
=:- /
Perhaps, maybe, but, what if...?

'West Coast Sunset'

"The tide has retreated with the setting sun
and with it the rolling surf that roared on to
the beach just a short time ago.
Calm and almost tranquil, the sea now rests.
You feel its breath on your face
in short breezy gusts of
cool marine air.
No longer fearing its force you stroll to its
edge and gaze seaward where
it seems to sleep.
Aware that not long from now its might will,
once again, send you scurrying to the
trees and rocks that hold her at bay.
Such beauty and raw power has always drawn
us to her like a mystical force
we cannot deny."

'Early Morning Frank Island'

An early morning walk on Chesterman Beach with big surf,
what a sight. The many surfers on this October morning
commonly exclaimed "Oh sweet" as they ran toward
the in-coming breakers launching themselves
and their boards into the water.

'Morning Surf'

Unlike my previous post this painting features a more
subtle, later morning sky but of course it's all
about the curling surf here.
Walking out on the sand as far as you dare
without getting your feet wet is
an exhilarating adventure.
However as I stood there marvelling at the
sound of those waves and feeling the pulse of the
sea, I felt somewhat lame as hardy, wet suit clad
surfers ran past me and hurled themselves and their
boards into the crashing surf.
Trying to catch, what I was assured were
very "SWEET" waves...

'Island Sunset',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Port Renfrew, Botany Bay)

This piece is a culmination of the theme of several of
the larger canvases I have completed recently.
I must say it has been very satisfying to work through
this series. Time to move on to something else for a bit.
Gotta get back amongst the oaks!

'Botany Bay',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Botanical Beach, oil painting of west coast Vancouver Island)

This is the larger version of a plein air painting I did
a couple of weeks ago. I have been busy working on a
series of larger paintings featuring west coast
ocean shoreline scenes.
Oil on canvas 30 x 36.
Your thoughts and comments always welcomed!
