Halcyon Fields

'Halcyon Fields'
oil on wood panel

~~~~~~~~~~~
'Not from successful love alone,
Nor wealth, nor honor'd middle age, nor victories of politics or war;
But as life wanes, and all the turbulent passions calm,
As, gorgeous, vapory, silent hues cover the evening sky,
As softness, fulness, rest, suffuse the frame, like freshier, balmier air,
As the days take on a mellower light, and the apple at last hangs
really finish'd and indolent-ripe on the tree,
Then for the teeming quietest, happiest days of all!
The brooding and blissful halcyon days!'
'Ready to Mow'
Waiting for the right weather before starting to cut hay is
always part of the hay'n game. However this year putting
two or three good days together in my area has been, to
say the least, quite a challenge. So much of a farmers
life has always revolved around weather.
We plein air painters can relate!
'One Evening in June'
I've been trying to get out to the fields as often as I can
right now as they will be haying soon. As well
the light early and late is really fantastic in mid June.
This one was painted yesterday evening and while
I worked I was reminded of the fields around where
I spent most of my childhood. This is a very
important time of year for someone very special to me,
my little sister. Her birthday is tomorrow and I was
thinking about the old days back in Concord, Ontario.
Our place was surrounded by farm fields and small
woodlots and we used to go back in the fields for miles
as if they were our own. We had names for certain
trees and other natural landmarks. I guess, though
we may end up far from where we begin
somehow we really never leave...
Happy Birthday Lisa!!
'Evensong Hayfields'
(Canadian west coast Impressionism, hayfield's, evening clouds oil painting)
Not long from now haying time will begin again on the
south Island as it will in many other locations across the
country. It is a very special and nostalgic time for me.
When the scent of fresh mown hay fills the air it takes
me back in a rush to many different times of my past.
I hope to paint many hayfield's again this
year preferably en plein air.
Oil on canvas 30 x 40.
