'Autumn on the River'

Hi everyone,
Well I'm back on the river once again so to
speak. This is the largest so far in the series.
This format allowed me to include more detail which helped
to show the drop in elevation as the water starts it's
rush to the head of the falls at the viewers left.
In the years I have been on southern Vancouver Island
my time on the water has largely been on the sea and
some of our inland lakes. However this series has made me
realize how much I've been missing and I'm planning
future painting excursions to this and other
rivers here on the south Island.

'Autumn on the Cowichan'

This was started as a demo I was invited to do for a
wonderful group of local artists last week.
Using my plein air rig I attempted to give a close
idea as to how I would approach painting this scene en plein
air only in this situation using a photo.
=:-/
As I had recently done a painting of this size en plein air
only a few feet from where the reference photo was taken
it helped me to keep it as real as possible (sort of).

'Above Skutz Falls'

As the title suggests this painting was painted just above
Skutz Falls on the Cowichan River during a magical
afternoon with bright sunlight highlighting the early fall
colour. The Cowichan river is one of the most important
rivers on Vancouver Island for spawning salmon and
very depleted steelhead. As well resident populations of
rainbow, cutthroat and brown trout. It has for millennia,
and continues to be, a central part of the lives and culture
of some of the islands first peoples. To say it
is a beautiful river is very much an understatement.
It is wonderful feeling to be able to spend time
painting it and to sense the spirits that still
occupy this vital watershed.
