'Lime Bay To McLoughlin Point'

This was painted several weeks ago now,
on a chilly early morning but when the winds
were plein air friendly =;-)
From this harbour side 'Songhees Walkway' the entrance
to Victoria's harbour (just to the left) can be seen and
to the right the mouth of West Bay which holds
so many memories for me.

'Snowy Coffin Island'

At low tide the Coffin Islands are a small and wondrous
place alive with the quarrelsome sounds of feeding
Wigeon as well as other competing waterfowl.
The islands lie on the north side of the entrance to West Bay
in Victoria's outer harbour. Though they both are probably
each under 100 feet across they rise up like the humps
on a camels back to at least 30 feet.
At below zero tide they seem higher yet when standing
on the exposed flats at their feet.
I made it out for a paint on Friday afternoon with painting pal
We dressed for cold as it was about -10 Celsius in the wind
which in this part of the world is damn cold.
But dressed right, out of the wind and in the sun
quite pleasant. Victoria has just passed through our first
big weather event of this winter. My neighbourhood
got close to 25cm of snow and then the cold winds
gusting at times to over 50 kmh. Our world famous
flower count is slated to begin on Tuesday!

Path to Hidden Harbour

This scene brings back many memories of that part
of my life when I lived and worked on the water.
While painting this piece a few of the folks I knew
back then strolled by and we spent some time
catching up and reminiscing. This path is a
well used short cut to both West Bay and
Hidden Harbour marinas on the north west side of
Victoria's inner harbour, all of which you can see
below when you walk the path.

Mute Swan **SOLD**

Although Mute swans have been introduced to
North America as park swans, our area has a
few that fly around as if wild. About
10 years ago we lived on a boat in West Bay Marina
across the harbour from Victoria. We were enjoying
a lazy afternoon on the dock when this grand
bird flew in and landed in the bay not far from the boat.
These birds are of course accustomed to being
fed by humans and so seeing us it wasn't long
till it was in camera range looking for
a possible handout.
They are incredibly beautiful birds.
Oil on board 8 x 10.
