'Waiting for the Swallows'

Here on the southern tip of Vancouver Island

we are experiencing one the strangest 

winters. Spring is here like it was

 late March already. However this

weather pattern is heading us toward a

severe wild fire season this year.

But for right now painting on a lovely

morning in this local marsh was

way past splendid!!

Mallards, Green-wings and Canada's were

working the shallow bog pools

like they meant it.

The sun felt good, real good...

'Misty Morning Swans'

One of the highlights of the winter season on the

south Island are the Tundra Swans that spend the

winter months here. Standing close to the marsh edge

when a small flock glides low overhead to land in the

water is a thrilling experience that warms the soul

even on a cool and damp west coast morning.

The marsh in those conditions softens sound

and the bugling calls of the swans

seem from another world.

Winter Wetland

This piece was painted plein air yesterday and

once again it was foggy along with very cool

temperatures. Our group of "outsiders" met at the

Viaduct Flats wetland a lovely spot just

outside of Victoria. This wetland area is a

wintering area for a large group of

Trumpeter swans that kept up a fantastic serenade

with their soft bugling/honking vocalizations.

Bird watching while painting outside, how great is that!
