Spectacle Lake

This is a well known local lake up on the Malahat
not far from Victoria. Because of the elevation
it has a very different feel to it compared to many
of the lakes I usually get to. I didn't get set up
until quite late in the afternoon and so this piece
was done quickly keeping details to a minimum.
Oil on board 6 x 6.
Comments welcomed.

Sweet September **SOLD**

Ah sweet September, that time of year when, if
we are lucky, the end of summer and the first hints of
fall mingle creating a magical window of glorious
warmth, light and colour. Lake swims are still part
of the plan and early morning light is fantastic.
That was Victoria's September this time around.
Oil on board 6 x 6.
Comments are always appreciated and encouraged.

Forest Trail **SOLD**

This is a place I never get enough of, and go as
often as I can. You can reconnect to nature, breath
deeply and smell the soul syrup. Sometimes you
even feel the spirits that surely inhabit the
shadows and the secret places that surround you.
Oil on board 6 x 6.

Turkeys Over Bentick Island

What I affectionately refer to as Turkeys are
more properly called Turkey Vultures, a close relative to
the Condors. Here in my area they are in the midst
of the annual migration. It is an amazing spectacle
to see these huge birds as they form up into
large circling groups or 'kettles' as they rise on
thermals. The kettles can be just a few birds or large
groups in the hundreds. As they soar in the warm updrafts
they slowly start to peel off as they head south.
We always keep an eye out at this time of year
for what I call the "Turkey Parade", when on those
special days hundreds of birds will glide past, all using
the same route, often just at tree top height. One after
another for hours at a time.
This painting depicts a large kettle forming over
Bentick Island in Race Passage.

Sunrise on Lyall St. **SOLD**

We have had some really great sunrises lately and
I decided I needed to try a painting of the way my
street looks in September just as the sun starts to
come up. I took a few photos on my morning walk
the other day and used them for reference.
Oil on board 6 x 6.

September Dawn

A very cool and overcast fall day greeted our
gang of outsiders today at Beaver Lake.
I had gone hoping for colour and didn't let reality
get in the way. For the past few weeks we
have had the most glorious light just before
sunrise and it seems to have found its
way into today's plein air painting.
Oil on board 10 x 8.

Ah Salal

Here in my area we are at the end of the Salal berry
season. One of my cherished summer rituals is gorging
on salal berries in late summer.
Salal berries were an important food resource for
the first peoples of the west coast of North America.
As well, the leaves of the salal shrub contain
many medicinal properties.

September - Maple Point

This well know site on Victoria's Gorge Inlet has many
historical aspects to it, one of which is that the school
house here is the oldest public building in all of
British Columbia. It was originally called the
Maple Point School, for obvious reasons.
It is now an official historic site and operated
as a museum of school life in the early days.
This is one of the larger pieces that will be in my
upcoming October show at the Morris Gallery.
Acrylic on canvas 24 x 30.

Small Craft Warning

This is the view leaving the Fleming Beach boat
launch here in Esquimalt.
We start fishing for salmon not far from here.
That was the plan the morning I took the photo
this piece was painted from. It did blow up about an hour
later and finished that day of fishing.

Summer Clouds

I painted this one in the studio using a recent small
plein air piece as reference. It is part of a series of
paintings I have been doing this summer of
various spots in Esquimalt Harbour.

September Hedgerow

This was done en plein air this morning on an old
farm property in Metchosin. It is now being restored
and operated by the Metchosin Boys & Girls Club with
assistance from other like groups. The large area
is filled with potential painting sites so that for me
proved to be the toughest test, to pick one of them.
The old hay field dotted with Queens Anne Lace
bordered with a very colourful mix of
Hawthorne and Blackberry won me over.
Oil on board 10 x 8.

Shoaling Waters

The title I chose for this piece is also the translation
for the name of the town where I live, Esquimalt.
It boast an incredibly picturesque waterfront that
never seems to grow old on the viewer.
I painted this en plein air yesterday morning from
a beach in Saxe Point park, however I did a bit of
fine tuning on it back in the studio as well.
We are having some of the best weather of the year
right now...have to try and get out again this week!
Oil on board 11 x 14.
Comments are always welcomed and appreciated.

Pilkey Point-Thetis Island

I painted this from a photo that I took while visiting
Thetis Island a few years back. Often at this time in late
May we get those below minimum tides that I find so
intriguing. The area is full of wonderful
painting opportunities.
Oil on canvas 8 x 10.

Saxe Point Shoreline

This was done en plein air this morning. The weather was
nothing short of stellar! Saxe Point is gem of a park here
in Esquimalt. The point faces South and the veiws from
almost anywhere near the shore are spectacular.
I am so fortunate that I have a veiw of these rocks and the
west side of the point from my studio, though of course they
are further away than in this painting. Transient Orcas, more
commonly known as Killer Whales, will sometimes hunt for
seals in close to the point.
Last week we were lucky to watch a pod of
three Orcas do just that, right from our studio window, wow!
Oil on board 11 x 14.

Afternoon Clouds-Inskip Island

My fascination with clouds continues.
I was able to get out painting again on Sunday afternoon
and once again the cloud formations were fantastic!
This piece was painted on primed and
gessoed masonite and I really enjoyed the different
feel of the way the paint went on.
Oil on board 8 x 10.
