friend on the occasion of her 90th birthday.
Born on a farm in the Canadian prairies she has
lived a very full and interesting life that she
has chronicled in a wonderful book.
A veteran of WW II she continues to lead
a very active and independent life.
Most of her life she went by the name of Kay.
Being of Ukrainian heritage in those days
many of her siblings and friends had their
names arbitrarily changed by a grade
school teacher on their first day at school
because they where considered too unusual
and hard to pronounce! When she told us
this story several years ago we have always
called her by her birth name 'Catrina' which
always brings a smile to her face.

I like this portrait, Jeffrey. You've captured a very strong spirit and you're pretty lucky to have such a friend. We have a neighbor lady who lives across the street from us who, with her husband, built some of the houses in our 'hood back in the mid 40s. She has that kind of expression and looks like she could be a distant relative.
What a treasure. And, very, very good painting!
Thanks Melinda...it really is wonderful to be able to connect to our past with someone who really was there!

Beautiful.
My husband's mother was born in Diligent River, NS. Her older sister lived her life in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, beginning in a sod house. I believe she lived way into her 90's.
Thanks Mary...there must be a book in there somewhere...

What a wonderful and generous gift for your friend, Jeffrey. Not only the beautiful portrait you painted for her, but also that you call her by her given name.
Hope you are well,
Nicki
