'Afternoon Sparkle'

I approached this painting from a completely different
angle. I am very fortunate that the views from my studio
are stunning to say the least. One afternoon this week I
was sitting having a coffee and enjoying the view from my
balcony and noticed the late afternoon light sparkling
on the bay almost three miles away. Not for the first time
I grabbed my binoculars and began studying the scene
and thought I need to paint this. Rather than set up my
whole kit I grabbed a small canvas loaded a brush with
my usual mix of thinner and oil paint for the preliminary
sketch and sat back down outside and began sketching
using the binoculars. Then back in the studio I began
to paint going back outside to look at the scene again
from time to time through the binoculars.
Not sure how many others have done this
but it was a first for me.
Oil on canvas 6 x 8.

'Moss Street Stroller'

I painted this piece while manning my site
last Saturday at the
Art Gallery of Greater Victoria's
'23rd Annual Moss St. Paint-In'
As usual the event is looked forward to by
art lovers and artist alike and is always
a huge success with as many as 35,000
spectators for the five and a half hour event!
This years event was no exception.
Across the street from my site I noticed a lovely
'Lavatera' in full bloom back lite in the morning
sun as I set up. Painting it later I added an imaginary
women strolling by, though, by then I could hardly
see the shrub for the crowds of onlookers.
Painting en plein air in a situation like that was to
say the very least, very challenging and
then I went and added a figure... jeeez!
During the show I was happily surprised to have
fellow 'daily painters .com' artist
David Roberts from Winnipeg drop by for a visit wow!
Oil on wood panel 12 x 9.
Thoughts and comments always appreciated!

I have included a few photo's of my site and the
fog rolling up the street toward us.
It made things quite cool for the next couple of hours

'Summer Wind-Oak Bay'

Fierce winds today on the south coast but I managed
to tuck myself out of most of it and still be able
to paint its effect on the water under the bright sun.
I have painted many times at Cattle Point but there
is always another angle with different light and season.
The sparkle of the water was very intense and is
what grabbed my attention for this piece.
(my apologize for the poor photo here)
Oil on wood panel
 9 x 12.

'Summer Evening-Uplands Park'

I painted this piece last week on one of those wonderful
summer evenings, the kind you dream about during
those cool wet days in the winter. Gone are the lush
drifts of blue camas, yellow butter cups and green
spring grasses, all have been replaced with the soft
yellow white grasses and red tinged sedges drying
amongst the rocky outcroppings. While I
painted the heat of the late day sun created
wonderful scents as it warmed the mature grasses
and the dried moss. The seed eating birds are were
very active feasting on the bounty of ripening seeds.
Oil on wood panel 6 x 8.
Your thoughts and comments are welcomed!
