'Stormy Afternoon'

It has an endless fascination, big surf roaring in
to meet the hard crust of rocky coast.
The flashes of sparkling light and
prisms of colour thrill our senses in
a show of natures power that has held us in
awe since the old ones walked these shores.

'South Island Spectacular'

Those of you who follow this blog from time to
time may remember that back in March I had
a wonderful plein air experience with a sky filled
all day with tremendous cloud formations.
This piece was developed
from photo's taken on that excursion as well
the painting done then and one done a
couple days later in a different location.
I may try and do several more... =:-/

'Rising Wind - Holland Point'

Though I may seem to whine a bit about bad weather
the neat thing about cloudy wet weather is getting set
up as the winds rise and the clearing begins.
I was lucky enough to get out one afternoon a
couple of weeks ago for just that sort of event.
The clouds and sparkle on the water seems so much
brighter and lively. Little things that make plein air
so very interesting and challenging.

'Juan de Fuca Light'

I was fortunate to be set up ready to go when the light
broke through the dispersing clouds. Transferring the
blinding brilliance of that fast changing light as the patterns
moved across the water I found to
be quite a challenge. However in this instance the
surface of the sea was dark with shimmering light that
allowed for an interesting contrast.

'One October Morning' *SOLD*

This was painted a couple of weeks ago on a
beautiful October morning on Victoria's waterfront.
I was able to make it out early enough to
catch some interesting light and colour.
This spot is above Holland Point looking south across
the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Washington's
Olympic Mountains.

'Afternoon Sparkle'

I approached this painting from a completely different
angle. I am very fortunate that the views from my studio
are stunning to say the least. One afternoon this week I
was sitting having a coffee and enjoying the view from my
balcony and noticed the late afternoon light sparkling
on the bay almost three miles away. Not for the first time
I grabbed my binoculars and began studying the scene
and thought I need to paint this. Rather than set up my
whole kit I grabbed a small canvas loaded a brush with
my usual mix of thinner and oil paint for the preliminary
sketch and sat back down outside and began sketching
using the binoculars. Then back in the studio I began
to paint going back outside to look at the scene again
from time to time through the binoculars.
Not sure how many others have done this
but it was a first for me.

'October Morning' **SOLD**

(Beacon Hill Park, plein air oil painting, west coast Impressionism

A beautiful fall morning met our gang of outsiders this
morning at Beacon Hill park. Looking south to the Olympic
Peninsula and the Strait of Juan de Fuca I attempted
to capture the early morning light with the fantastic
clouds and early fall colours that are just
getting started here in Victoria.
