'Uplands Camas' **SOLD**(Canadian west coast Impressionism, oil painting of Uplands Park, Victoria, BC, Camas Lily)

Uplands Park in Oak Bay is at its finest right now as

I discovered this morning when I arrived for a paint out.

Beautiful drifts of our native Camas Lily among the

rocky outcrops in this natural Garry oak meadow are

really something to see. While I painted there this

morning it was lovely to sense the spirits of the first

peoples, whose footprints were here thousands of years

before first contact, harvesting the Camas bulbs

as a major staple of their diet.

Happy Earth Day Everyone!

I went up to Highrock for a paint after lunch today and

I'm glad I did. The park is spectacular right now with

the Garry oaks and the Camas in full bloom.

It was quite windy making me grab for

my easel a few times, just in time!

'Spring Pasture',(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Saanich Peninsula plein air oil painting, sheep pasture

Here on the south end of Vancouver Island the rush of

spring is at its height. That time when the brightness of

emerging leaves is keyed up even more with the bright

morning sun. I pulled off to the side of a quiet country road

on Friday and quickly painted this piece. The pasture is

actually being used by a large flock of sheep, the wet area

by pairs of Canada geese and small bunches of

Green-winged Teal and a few Mallards none of whom,

mysteriously, made it into this painting =;-))

Overhead swallows soared in the warm air hunting insects

and a young eagle made low swoops over the pond

hoping for slow moving waterfowl but having no

success as the geese put up a chorus as it approached.

The heady scent of spring cottonwood filled the

air with its soul stirring scent.

'April Afternoon',(Canadian west coast Impressionism, April clouds, southern Vancouver Island, plein air oil painting)

This is the second piece I spoke of in my last post. Those

lovely cloud formations have become more threatening

and dramatic in nature. The shadows they cast on the

landscape below them heightens the drama and interest.

This photo did come out a tad dark in lower quarter

of the painting, so another will have to be taken.

The contrast of the cloud darkened areas and those in

the full sun were quite dazzling as I painted this piece.

'April Sky-Highrock', (Canadian west coast Impressionism, plein air oil painting, Esquimalt BC)

Another session up on Highrock with the clouds. An early

start allowed time for two paintings this trip. Course it

helped that the clouds continued to perform. Fortunately

the roving bands of showers didn't show up until I was

back in the studio...ooo nice =;-))

April clouds from Highrock Park looking north west.

'March Cloud Pattern',(Canadian west coast Impressionism, spring clouds oil painting, Highrock Park)

Over the past week or so we have been having what I like

to call 'cloud events' that is to say that the cloud formations

moving through have been nothing short of spectacular.

I've been back up on Highrock several times recently

trying to capture these wonderful skies in paint.

Painting a moving target, yikes, and the shadows they cast

on the distant hills!! Lots of migrating birds to see

on my jaunts up the hill right now which makes

for a grand painting excursion!
