'South Island Light'

'South Island Light'
oil on canvas
30 x 40

'I would like to wish you a Happy Solstice with a hope that at this time, as the rhythms of the natural world align themselves to the return of the light, that we all take some time to reflect.
Many at this time are anxious to find an answer to questions of why, how and who's fault. As it has been said many times in song and verse the answer lies within us all, not in a book or a law or a particular belief but inside our individual human souls. We all share the blame and we all have the answers. As we welcome the light think of the things you as a human being would wish to leave behind and what it is that you would welcome into our new year ahead.  We all have the human qualities to love and hate. We all have the right to seek and achieve happiness. These are some of the things that make us human. Please try to open your heart and mind to love, peace and happiness.'

compared to what lives within us.”

'Alpine Morning'

'Alpine Morning' oil 24 x 30

Wishing you all peace, love & joy
this holiday season,
and all the best for 2013.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey
I would like to leave you with a poem from the
American poet Robert Frost
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

'The Rugged Coast'

Watching the incredible force of these Pacific
swells being thrown skyward by these
coastal ramparts is a thrilling
experience.
The knowledge that there are many animals
and birds that call this ecosystem home
makes you aware just how tenuous
our hold is to mother earth.

'Winter Memory'

Funny thing about memories, how something
from your past can become anothers' memory
but for an entirely different reason,
even though the making of the new
memory is because of the original one.
Yeah I know...but its true.
=8-/
I delivered this piece to a new and happy collector
earlier this week. Now, this memory is my memory
and I just passed it on to you.

'Morning Ferry'

On a morning such as this it is hard to imagine
the forces that have shaped these island
warriors. The beauty and peacefulness of the
Salish Sea when the morning overcast
mutes the brilliant colour of the sunrise and
softens the sounds of stillness, it can be deceptive.
But for right now standing there on these
volcanic remnants we whisper so we will hear
the chatter of the Oyster Catchers when they rise
off the Gillinghams and the Kingfisher
when it declares its marine territory
before diving into the sea
for its prey...

'Highrock Colour'

I painted on Sunday evening in one of my
favourite local spots and fall is in full
glory there right now.
I continue to find inspiration in this little park
that is only a very short distance
from my studio.

AGGV House Tour 2012

Last Sunday I had the honour of being one of the six
Victoria area artists to be featured in the
Art Gallery of Greater Victoria's
"HOUSE TOUR 2012"
This popular annual event has been organized by the
'GALLERY ASSOCIATES'
since 1953!!!!!!
Special thanks to them, AGGV volunteers (there were many)
the corporate sponsors and all the many hundreds
of ticket buying visitors and of course
the six home owners that opened their homes
for the event.
I was placed at the wonderful waterfront home on
Gonzales Bay...wow! I have uploaded a few photo's
of my day...

I started out with warm sun at my back lighting
up my subject. That soon changed (several times).

done, cleaned up and ready to pack up...

'Coastal Beauty'

As I sit here languishing in late summer bliss,
here on the south Island we are enjoying some of the
best weather of the year, I feel somewhat of a
grasshopper whiling away the days as
the cool wet months approach.
The beauty of the west coast  is never ending
for me. The sensuous grace of the Arbutus trees,
there fox red bark splitting in the August heat.
The newly exposed, smooth, pale green of the new bark
compels my caress.
Often situated in the most gravity defying locations their
ancient beauty is mesmerizing.

'Summer Heat'

A painting done one hot morning back in July,
on the trail above Swan Lake.
These Weeping willows caught my eye.
They hide and shade a magical pool
on a creek that feeds the lake.
 Their drooping, sunlit, frond like
branches had my hand moving as if
painting before I even set up.

'Evening Magic'

That magical moment just as the sun sets leaving
its golden glow on the landscape.
Those warm and mellow summer evenings
with the swallow families twisting and
darting as they chase down flying insects.
High above night hawks circle back and
fourth their white wing bars flashing in
the golden light.
These are the halcyon days
of summer we will dream of in late November.
Breathe deeply...

'Burgoyne Sky'

Once again I had the pleasure of painting in
the old hayfields of Burgoyne Bay Park on
Saltspring Island. I was able to enjoy the company
of many variety's of birds including, this time,
Martins and Goldfinches.
The painting started out in conditions much as
you see in this image.
However 30 minutes into it things rapidly
changed and found me running with easel, painting,
full palette and backpack for the van.
A sudden downpour tends to have that
affect on a brollyless plein airist.
This piece was completed a couple days later
back home in the studio...

'Last Light Botany Bay'

"The quiet is broken only by the small waves being pushed
ashore by the incoming tide.
You can sense something deeper in the cool stillness.
Soon the coming dusk will envelope the world
where you stand looking...and listening.
Yet you delay leaving,
though the trail back is long and growing ever darker.
Then, raven's call disturbs your reverie
and reluctantly you turn away from the sea
and head for the trail."

'West Coast Sunset'

"The tide has retreated with the setting sun
and with it the rolling surf that roared on to
the beach just a short time ago.
Calm and almost tranquil, the sea now rests.
You feel its breath on your face
in short breezy gusts of
cool marine air.
No longer fearing its force you stroll to its
edge and gaze seaward where
it seems to sleep.
Aware that not long from now its might will,
once again, send you scurrying to the
trees and rocks that hold her at bay.
Such beauty and raw power has always drawn
us to her like a mystical force
we cannot deny."

An early morning walk on Chesterman Beach with big surf,
what a sight. The many surfers on this October morning

'Cattle Point Camas'

This years Camas bloom at Cattle Point is nothing
short of spectacular. However due to the areas rocky terrain
and this weekends heat and drying winds it will very
quickly start the inevitable dying off.
The time of the Camas always seems
to take forever to start but so
soon to end...

and then you find it...'

'On An Ebbing Tide'

Soon the tide will retreat toward its source.
Surging, splashing waves will be transformed into
miles of open beach left silent now that the waves
have moved seaward. What was once a barrier to
further travel and exploration is now a silent
undulating and somewhat eerie expanse of freedom.
Exhilarating to walk on as the skies clear
and the afternoon light begins to fade
into evening...

'Soul Sisters' *SOLD*

I've been somewhat missing-in-action in the
blogoshere as the opening for my
two person show with Linny D. Vine draws nigh
and last minute preparations seem to mount.
All the paintings were delivered to the
Art Gallery of Greater Victoria yesterday
and that felt real gooooood.
Six more sleeps to the reception  =:-/
I have been painting though, if somewhat
distractedly.
This painting features those wonderful west coast
trees the Arbutus. Though the mighty cedars
and firs are regaled as the trees of the
west coast it is the Arbutus that holds sway
with my soul. Feminine and sensual in
character they are sacred to many of
the first peoples here on the south coast.
When you breathe in the scent of their profuse blossoms,
see the bountiful bright red clusters of their
edible berries among the leathery evergreen leaves
or sit quietly on a hot still mid summer afternoon and
hear the thin layers of bark begin to audibly crack
and peel from the smooth trunks,
you begin to understand...
