Light Snow

A group of "outsiders" met at historic Fort
Rodd Hill park this morning for some
plein air action. Though our area has been
without snow for several weeks now I
put reality on hold for this mornings paint out.

Highrock #12

A break in the weather yesterday afternoon saw me
back at Highrock Park. I've become fascinated
with the undulating surface of the moss covered rock
interspersed with the native firs and Garry oaks.
Our relatively mild wet winter weather makes
for perfect moss growing conditions and right
now the moss at Highrock is flourishing.

Gorge Light

This is a view from a footbridge over the
upper end of the Gorge. The water is mostly
brackish at this point. Restoration work on
the salmon run here has been on going for
some time and has had some success.
I found this to be a fairly complex subject for
a small format. Part of the water is in
full light and has cast shadows across its
surface with the bottom colour showing, the other
area of water has a reflection
of the far shore. The high contrast values of the
trees in the shoreline added yet another
challenge, perhaps to much... =;-))
I hope to do a larger version
of this soon.

High Rock #11

It was quite cool on Friday for plein air painting
but the sun was shining and that made
for a wonderful paint out for two of us.
Once again the shadows and that lovely moss
that blankets so much of the rocky outcroppings
of High Rock Park was my main focus.
I'm really enjoying painting here and look
forward to the next time!

Cowichan Lake Summer

When ever I think of Cowichan Lake in the
summer time, this is the spot that usually I
see in my minds eye.
If you like lake swimming
in the heat of high summer it doesn't get
better than this little cove.
This is yet another example of the
wonderful variations in colour
that show up in this lakes water.

Highrock #10

A stellar day for plein air painting today and I
was able to take advantage of it! Another one
from my park and in finding this spot I saw many
more painting sites to come...stay tuned.
(My apologies for the poor photo!)

Winter Wetland

This piece was painted plein air yesterday and
once again it was foggy along with very cool
temperatures. Our group of "outsiders" met at the
Viaduct Flats wetland a lovely spot just
outside of Victoria. This wetland area is a
wintering area for a large group of
Trumpeter swans that kept up a fantastic serenade
with their soft bugling/honking vocalizations.
Bird watching while painting outside, how great is that!
Oil on board 6 x 6.

Highrock Moss

We have been having "Inversion Layer" weather
here in Victoria that leaves us mostly in the fog until
afternoon if were lucky. I ran out yesterday afternoon
when it broke up, to that little park I've been painting.
There are amazing rock formations on the hill there,
all smoothed by glacial activity and large areas
covered in lovely moss which is featured in this
plein air piece. This is painting #9 from this
park, only 91 to go!

The Fisherman

My youngest son in happier times, close to
twenty years ago now. Always ready to fish
then and now. Painting from old photos
always opens up so many memories.
Tough sometimes not to get lost in them.

Mute Swan **SOLD**

Although Mute swans have been introduced to
North America as park swans, our area has a
few that fly around as if wild. About
10 years ago we lived on a boat in West Bay Marina
across the harbour from Victoria. We were enjoying
a lazy afternoon on the dock when this grand
bird flew in and landed in the bay not far from the boat.
These birds are of course accustomed to being
fed by humans and so seeing us it wasn't long
till it was in camera range looking for
a possible handout.
They are incredibly beautiful birds.

September Fields

This is part of a group of hay fields that I have painted
before though at different times of day and season.
The rolling contours are what I find the most intriguing.

Carvin'

This was painted from a photo of my oldest son
doing what makes his heart the happiest!
Here in southern BC we are experiencing one of
the worst years ever for avalanche danger
with no end in sight!
So for all you boarders out there listen up...
Be cool...not no fool
get down...stay in bounds.
It really is very bad out there right now.

Cowichan Light

This is a larger version of a 6 x 6 I did several
months ago. It is my hope to use many of the
small ones I have been doing and work them up into
larger pieces as I journey on.
This is a view point scene on a trail at Cowichan Lake
on Vancouver Island. The water there takes on incredible
colours through day as the light changes.

Winter Morning-Beacon Hill

Another example of Victoria's historic
Beacon Hill parks garry oak ecosystem under a
blanket of snow. This area was once a major food
gathering area for the first peoples of our
region. It is a wonderful thing that it has been saved
from further development for all to enjoy.
When ever I walk among these trees I can't
help but imagine what it must have looked like
here before contact and all that followed.

Close To Me

Oh, oh...a self portrait...yikes.
Being primarily a landscape painter this was
quite a challenge, but it was a lot of fun.
No my teeth don't really look like that!
A joke I have often shared with another artist goes,
that your not a real painter until you have
done painting of a cow, a crow, a pear and a
self portrait, I guess I'm getting there.

'October Shadows' **SOLD**

This painting was done from a photo
I took last fall while painting in a small park
close to my studio (my 100 paintings park).
From the top of the summit to the left in
the painting there is an almost 360 degree view.
For its size this park has an incredible
amount of painting possibilities
which I hope to take advantage of
over the course of 2009.

'Winter Willows' **SOLD**

Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary is a natural bog wetland
here in Victoria. It is an extremely important area
to many species of birds, most prominently, waterfowl.
However many other types of birds use the
thick stands of native willows and rushes
for nesting and shelter.

the view I have from my studio I had to
make adjustments to make it work in this
small format. The point actually appears
much larger in scale in real life.
