Morning Light-Saanich

This piece was painted last week on one of
those special spring mornings when that smell
of spring cottonwoods sweetens every breath you take.
The sounds and flight of birds fill the air and compete
with the quiet stillness of the rural countryside.
It was a grand day painting with three
buddies, plein air painters all!
Oil on canvas 20 x 16.

Saanich Spring

This piece was done early last week on a beautiful
spring day on the Saanich Peninsula. The shadows
being cast by the drifting clouds are what
really caught my eye in this scene.
Oil on board 11 x 14.

Spring Morning-Beacon Hill

The naturalized daffodils and the many wildflowers are
blooming now in Victoria's Beacon Hill Park.
I painted with a group of outsiders there this morning.
This sky represents the one that I witnessed on
my mornings walk, however it had clouded over by
the time I was painting. But reality can be a
relative thing when one puts brush to canvas...

Oil on canvas 16 x 20.

Mount Work Tapestry

I got up on the top of Highrock just in time to paint
these clouds as the heavy overcast began to
break up and form wonderful patterns
over distant Mount Work.
Oil on wood panel 9 x 12.

Gillingham Islands-Saxe Point

The Gillingham Islands are
a small group of rock islets
that lie off the southeast side of
Saxe Point and
are a main feature in the views from this
park in lovely Esquimalt.
They are a popular diving and
 fishing location here,
and by the amount of interest
shown to them by our group of outsiders
Friday morning they are very popular
among plein air painters as well.
Another attempt for me to try and capture
the subtle light and colour
 present on a cloudy morning
on the shore of Juan de Fuca Strait.
Oil on wood panel
9 x 12.
Comments welcomed and encouraged!

Highrock Light

This piece was painted en plein air last Thursday
during a lovely break in the weather.
I tried to capture that special quality of light that
happens at this time of year when the air still carries
lots of moisture. As well, I used a limited palette.
Oil on canvas 9 x 12.
As always, your comments are most welcome!

Mount Doug Clouds

Several weeks ago I was able to photograph some
spectacular cloud formations from the top of Mount
Tolmie. These clouds where the type we seldom
see here in Victoria. They are the sort I have seen
painted of the skies in places such as New Mexico.
Huge towering formations rolling across the sky
changing rapidly as they past. When I got back to
the studio I was able to take more photo's of them
now filled with colours from the sun setting behind me.
From these photo's I hope to do a large series of
paintings, this being the first.

Oil on board 6 x 8.

March Clouds

I spent a lovely afternoon painting these clouds from
the top of Highrock park last Sunday. Our weather is
so unsettled right now that getting out when
conditions are good is a real treat.
I have been working with a different coloured
ground lately and liking it!
Oil on canvas 9 x 12.

March Sky-Discovery Island

About a dozen ardent plein air painters were
greeted with a raw wind, cool temperatures and
intermittent drizzle this morning at Cattle Point
on Oak Bay. Finding a spot where the wind
was bearable was a priority. Painting fast essential!
I finished this piece in the studio later.
Oil on canvas 12 x 9.

Cloud Shadows

I made it up to Highrock yesterday afternoon
just as some fantastic clouds were forming
and casting shadows across the distant hills.

"Paint fast lad, paint fast!!"

Though we are still dealing with unseasonably
cool temperatures here, the spring wildflowers
have started up in the rocky meadows like
those in this park. I have uploaded a photo
of some of them below.

Oil on canvas 12 x 9.

That September Afternoon

This painting was worked up using a smaller piece
I did last fall as a reference. Those wonderful
summer like days of late September last year
seem so long ago right now!
I went with acrylics for this painting as it has
been quite awhile since I last used them and
thought I could use a bit of a refresher.
Acrylic on canvas 30 x 24.

Rainy Day-Albert Head

I am becoming more and more convinced that I will
have to invest in some sort of "brolly" to cover my easel
for those inevitable showers that plein air painters
have to deal with from time to time.
Friday morning was just that sort of occasion.
I was set up in a wonderful spot high above Wittys
Lagoon and Albert Head in the middle distance with
Trial and San Juan Islands on the distant horizon.
Showers stopped and started and stopped completely
with the sun out about 20 minutes after
we packed it in! =;-))

Friday Morning at Frank's

On Friday morning our non group of plein air painters
were invited out to Frank Mitchell's farm to paint.
It was a magical morning filled with the
bleating of the farms newly born lambs and their
mothers. The farm is situated high on a
cliff overlooking the strait of Juan de Fuca and
the approach to Witty's Lagoon.
Two ancient Hemlock sisters caught my attention,
the way they will lean together always and the
striped car track leading toward the
farm buildings back in the trees.
Oil on canvas 12 x 9.

March Morning - Oak Bay Marina

Had a lovely morning plein air painting on Thursday
with a couple of buddies. We set up on a pretty
busy spot near the marina in Oak Bay and
spent about an hour. This piece is a little different
in style for me as I simplified as much as I could.
I like the very graphic result.
Oil on board 6 x 6.

Island Spring

The areas of natural Garry oak meadows in our area
will look much like this sometime in the later part
of April. It is a real south island treat to walk
amongst the flowering oaks and carpets of
camas lily and other wildflowers at that time.
This is another piece I will have in the show
opening tonight at the Morris Gallery.
Oil on canvas 30 x 24.

High Rock Rumba

I was up on High Rock park on Friday morning
and came back with this piece.
Our native Garry oaks really are this twisted
and curled and seem at times to be growing
right out of the rock.
I tried for a stylized look with this piece.
Oil on canvas 12 x 9.

Lagoon Sky

I painted this piece using a smaller plein air sketch,
done early last summer, for reference.
This is an important area for migrating shorebirds
and waterfowl. Birders will be watching for small bunches
Pacific Black Brant which have already been sighted
in this area last week.
Oil on canvas 9 x 12.

Afternoon Clouds-Esquimalt Harbour

Drifting clouds casting shadows on a sunlit afternoon
is a cherished memory to contemplate on
a cool overcast day in February.
I guess those teachers and adult figures in my
past who mentioned so often that
"I had my head in the clouds",
may have been right after all!

Passing Storm

This painting was worked up from a small one that I
painted several months ago. One of Victoria's
important light stations it sits about three miles to the
north of Victoria's inner harbour. Trial Island light has
been guarding the approach to both Oak Bay and
Victoria for many years and has been instrumental
to navigation and saving the lives of many mariners
in the often rough seas it surveys.
Oil on canvas 16 x 20.
Your comments are always a pleasure.
