'Burgoyne Sky'

Once again I had the pleasure of painting in
the old hayfields of Burgoyne Bay Park on
Saltspring Island. I was able to enjoy the company
of many variety's of birds including, this time,
Martins and Goldfinches.
The painting started out in conditions much as
you see in this image.
However 30 minutes into it things rapidly
changed and found me running with easel, painting,
full palette and backpack for the van.
A sudden downpour tends to have that
affect on a brollyless plein airist.
This piece was completed a couple days later
back home in the studio...

'Last Light Botany Bay'

"The quiet is broken only by the small waves being pushed
ashore by the incoming tide.
You can sense something deeper in the cool stillness.
Soon the coming dusk will envelope the world
where you stand looking...and listening.
Yet you delay leaving,
though the trail back is long and growing ever darker.
Then, raven's call disturbs your reverie
and reluctantly you turn away from the sea
and head for the trail."

'South Chesterman Sunrise'

Sometimes a scene so endears its self to you
that once is not enough. This is my
third attempt at this scene ...
(Is he done with it yet?  You might ask )

'West Coast Sunset'

"The tide has retreated with the setting sun
and with it the rolling surf that roared on to
the beach just a short time ago.
Calm and almost tranquil, the sea now rests.
You feel its breath on your face
in short breezy gusts of
cool marine air.
No longer fearing its force you stroll to its
edge and gaze seaward where
it seems to sleep.
Aware that not long from now its might will,
once again, send you scurrying to the
trees and rocks that hold her at bay.
Such beauty and raw power has always drawn
us to her like a mystical force
we cannot deny."

'Early Morning Frank Island'

An early morning walk on Chesterman Beach with big surf,
what a sight. The many surfers on this October morning
commonly exclaimed "Oh sweet" as they ran toward
the in-coming breakers launching themselves
and their boards into the water.

'Cattle Point Camas'

This years Camas bloom at Cattle Point is nothing
short of spectacular. However due to the areas rocky terrain
and this weekends heat and drying winds it will very
quickly start the inevitable dying off.
The time of the Camas always seems
to take forever to start but so
soon to end...

'Low Tide Adventures'

'An adventure most magical,
when the tides run out leaving that which was inaccessible,
exposed to unlimited exploration.
The warm spring sun on winter hidden skin,
the cries of sea birds carried on the sea breeze,
and then you find it...'

'On An Ebbing Tide'

Soon the tide will retreat toward its source.
Surging, splashing waves will be transformed into
miles of open beach left silent now that the waves
have moved seaward. What was once a barrier to
further travel and exploration is now a silent
undulating and somewhat eerie expanse of freedom.
Exhilarating to walk on as the skies clear
and the afternoon light begins to fade
into evening...

'Soul Sisters' *SOLD*

I've been somewhat missing-in-action in the
blogoshere as the opening for my
two person show with Linny D. Vine draws nigh
and last minute preparations seem to mount.
All the paintings were delivered to the
Art Gallery of Greater Victoria yesterday
and that felt real gooooood.
Six more sleeps to the reception  =:-/
I have been painting though, if somewhat
distractedly.
This painting features those wonderful west coast
trees the Arbutus. Though the mighty cedars
and firs are regaled as the trees of the
west coast it is the Arbutus that holds sway
with my soul. Feminine and sensual in
character they are sacred to many of
the first peoples here on the south coast.
When you breathe in the scent of their profuse blossoms,
see the bountiful bright red clusters of their
edible berries among the leathery evergreen leaves
or sit quietly on a hot still mid summer afternoon and
hear the thin layers of bark begin to audibly crack
and peel from the smooth trunks,
you begin to understand...

'Easter At The Beach' *SOLD*

Soon in a lovely spot not far from my studio
a scene will play out something like this.
A memory will be made and will
be remembered many times in the future.
When April's sun warms the wet
sand left exposed by a spring tide and
freedom reigns...
This is another in a recent series that
will be part of my upcoming show

'Rushing To The Edge'

There is a place not far from here where the jagged cliff face of this island thrust fourth to meet the force of the Salish Sea. Howling gales and crashing waves have, over the millennia, carved and broken off chunks of this volcanic remnant and left those pieces strewn on the bottom below where the waves boil and crash amongst them to reach the edge. It is at once a place that you feel in your belly as much as see with your eyes. The forces and beauty of the west coast are in grand display here. It is hard to leave for fear that the connections you feel while standing there might be broken. You can sense the spirits of those human beings who first left footprints
in this place in the long ago time.

'Sunlight On Pieris'

Sometimes as artists we have to stretch
ourselves and go fourth on some different genres.
It has been quite sometime since I painted anything
but landscapes or seascapes.
However after this exercise I might start making
this type of thing more normal for
me than not...

'Morning Surf'

Unlike my previous post this painting features a more
subtle, later morning sky but of course it's all
about the curling surf here.
Walking out on the sand as far as you dare
without getting your feet wet is
an exhilarating adventure.
However as I stood there marvelling at the
sound of those waves and feeling the pulse of the
sea, I felt somewhat lame as hardy, wet suit clad
surfers ran past me and hurled themselves and their
boards into the crashing surf.
Trying to catch, what I was assured were
very "SWEET" waves...

'Sunrise On The Salish Sea'

Containing natures drama within the confines of
a particular size support and yet trying to allow
its raw beauty to some how be free is always a
challenge. Magically with a bit of paint
and some patient perseverance
we sometimes come close.
Alas it is after all but paint and canvas.
However artists do dream and
sometimes, even dreams can come true.
This is another one for my upcoming show
in March at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria,

Last Monday I had the honour of painting

On Winter's Eve afternoon I painted in a
favourite spot not far from the studio.
It felt good being out painting on that crisp

and marveled once again at the
natural beauty so close to home.
Two Flickers spent some time observing
my progress sitting just above me
in a young Garry Oak.

'Winter Gale'

*Happy New Year Everyone!*

I painted this piece from the protection of the
cab of my truck yesterday, using my homemade
lap box that I put together with this in mind.
It was blowin' 35 kmh gusting to 50
and the wind surfers were in their glory!
Rain squalls, then sunshine with rainbows then
back again all within minutes so paint fast
boyo! It was cold in the truck and the gust
buffeting my rolling studio made a steady hand
an illusion at best.
If this truck is rockin' don't... =:-/

Well it looks like Victoria, like many other areas, will have
a 'green' Christmas this year (not unusual for my neck

'Highrock Rhythms'

'Highrock Rhythms' oil on canvas 30 x 40

This painting was inspired by an earlier plein air piece
that was sold a couple of years ago. I enlarged the
format and changed the season among other things.
I have included an image of the original below
for comparison. Naturally the huge size deferential
may be hard to imagine in this posting.

'October Surprise'

Though they can be challenging to deal with sometimes,
those surprise snowfalls that happen in October or
early November can be such a visual treat.
I find it a very stimulating subject to
paint because generally so much
of the work is purely imagination
based on natures reality.
A good test for your
'seeing' senses.

'Clearing Skies-Incinerator Rock'

Another one from my west coast plein air
adventure, this one at Long Beach and the amazing
geological marvel Incinerator Rock.
It stands like a bulwark against the never ending
surf that rolls and crashes onto this spectacular
edge of Canada. They break against this rock behemoth
with incredible displays of natures force.
One feels much in awe and small in the
presence of such grandeur.
I'm not convinced that a mere 9 x 12 panel
has done it justice...

'October Sunrise-Cox Bay'

This is one of the paintings from a recent painting
adventure to Tofino on Vancouver Islands west coast,
and the wild open Pacific. It is incredibly exhilarating
to stand on strip of tidal beach that separates one bay
from another and watch and listen to the big surf
rolling and crashing in front and behind you and keeping
a close eye on the tide as it rises around you.
By the time I finished it was only 20 feet away
from me and my easel.
