'Winter Moss-Highrock' *SOLD*

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Highrock Park, Esquimalt BC, plein air oil painting)

I have not be able to get out for a paint for some time
but managed to make it up to Highrock last Sunday
with my painting pal Linny D. Vine. I stopped at a spot
I often go by and wonder about painting but never have.
It was warm in the sun and the sheltered location for
most of our paint out but it didn't take us long to
return to the vehicle when the time was up.

'Catrina',

I painted this portrait as gift for a very dear
friend on the occasion of her 90th birthday.
Born on a farm in the Canadian prairies she has
lived a very full and interesting life that she
has chronicled in a wonderful book.
A veteran of WW II she continues to lead
a very active and independent life.
Most of her life she went by the name of Kay.
Being of Ukrainian heritage in those days
many of her siblings and friends had their
names arbitrarily changed by a grade
school teacher on their first day at school
because they where considered too unusual
and hard to pronounce! When she told us
this story several years ago we have always
called her by her birth name 'Catrina' which
always brings a smile to her face.

This painting is a larger version of one I did a couple

A natural peat bog, it is a very important avian
sanctuary and a lovely place to walk the trail that
circles the lake and marsh areas.

'November Willow',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Gorge Waterway, willows, Takata tea house, Victoria BC)

November in my part of the world is a time when the
willows both native and otherwise really show off their
colour. On these dark and dreary days that we have
been having they glow like lamps in the landscape.
However this Friday morning we were delighted by
bright sunny skies and brisk temperatures.
The early morning frost can be blamed for "inspiring" the
early snow in this piece. This was painted in a very
historic part of Victoria, which is now part of the
Gorge Waterway park system. However starting in
the early 1900's this was the terminus on the Gorge Loop
of the long since vanished BC Electric street car system.
It became a site of beautiful gardens, amusements, plays
and musical performances. For many years the Takata
family had a wonderful floating tea house and Japanese
strolling garden here. There was also a large sampan that
could be boarded in Victoria's inner harbour and ridden
to the tea house and surrounding park. There is
an effort underway to restore some of the old
Japanese garden to its former glory, which was heavily
vandalized and slowly destroyed following the
invasion of Pearl Harbour in WWII.
For a more detailed history, complete with some
wonderful old photo's please refer to Dennis Minaker's
fantastic book 'The Gorge of Summers Gone' A History
of Victoria's Inland Waterway.

'Winter Afternoon-Swan Lake',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Swan Lake, Vancouver Island)

I painted this today in the studio as a practice run for a
larger canvas. We continue to be deluged by rain
storm after rain storm so picking a time to paint between
downpours is almost impossible, I'm not much of a
'brolly painter'! I will probably try and get a better
photo when this piece dries a bit more.

'November Poplars',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Fort Rodd Hill, poplars, cottonwood, plein air oil painting)

This past Friday morning brought a few hours of splendid
painting weather. A small band of hardy plein air
painters met up at Fort Rodd Hill for the mornings paint out.
The biggest problemwith this spot is the amazing amount
of painting sites to choose from. The wind, if any,
often helps with the decision.
I had gone hoping to catch the last colour of the
cottonwoods and poplars, however due to the wind
storms for several days prior, I had to make a few...
reality adjustments =;-))

'September Evening-Highrock',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Highrock Park, Esquimalt BC, Western Tanagers, September)

It has been a very hectic past few weeks with art shows and
other related activities and my blogging has been infrequent
to say the least. As well, my painting time has been very
limited. This piece was painted from a photo I took on an
early September evening while up on Highrock for
for a paint out with artist Linny D. Vine.
It was a lovely warm evening and we were very fortunate
to be there just as a large foraging flock of migrating
Western Tanagers arrived to feed, much to the dismay
of several cranky Olive-sided Flycatchers. There was
non-stop activity for over an hour. I went back up the
next evening hoping for a repeat but it was as though
all the birds in the world had vanished!

'Good Morning Burgoyne Bay',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Saltspring Island, Burgoyne Bay, spirits)

This painting was developed from reference photo's I
took while having a picnic lunch here last May. It
was very still and calm, almost as though we were the
only ones there. At our backs Mount Maxwell's cliffs rise
to their dizzying heights creating warm updrafts which
many turkey vultures and swallows were utilizing. As we
sat there scanning our surroundings and breathing in the
briny scents of low tide I could feel the presence of the
spirits that surely spend their eternity here.

Oil on canvas 36 x 48.

I managed to make it out on Wednesday this week for a

scurring to the vehicle, not quite quick enough however!

'Morning Sky-Fisgard Light', **SOLD**

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, Fisgard Light, Esquimalt Harbour)

All of our old light stations throughout Canada seem
to evoke a sense of nostalgia for a by-gone era.
Though those times are gone many of the old lights still
do what they have always done, help to keep mariners safe.
Fisgard Light is the oldest on Canada's west coast. She first
showed light at sunset on November 16, 1860. Now
an designated historic site and museum, she has been
under going a complete refit this summer.
Still watching over the entrance to Esquimalt harbour it
was automated many years ago, her white or red beacon and
fog horn are a feature in Victoria's waters.
I can hear her signal now on this foggy autumn evening.

'West Coast Treasures',

(Canadian west coast Impressionism, McNeill Bay, plein air oil painting

The title for this piece was chosen for its ambiguity.
I painted this on a glorious afternoon last week. This spot
is on the north side of McNeil Bay on Victoria's
beautiful waterfront. A very gentle soul soothing
place the beach leads out to a rocky island that is
accessible in most tides and across a narrow channel lies
the historic Trial Island light and beyond that
the Olympic Mountains across the strait.
Due to the very fast tides that swirl through this area
loads of flotsam are strewn in drifts along the
stone pebble beach. All of these treasures in their
own right, but all together, a real
west coast beach combers bonanza!

'Autumn - Esquimalt Lagoon'

(cutthroat trout, plein air, Canadian west coast Impressionism)

On Friday morning our group of plein air painters
concentrated their efforts near the mouth of the Esquimalt
Lagoon. It is a beautiful spot with the beach contours
changing with the tide. The area is a significant bird refuge
here on southern Vancouver Island as well, a small stream
that feeds into the upper end of the lagoon is used by
sea-run cutthroat trout for spawning.
This is a special time up here in the Great White North,
we celebrate Thanksgiving this weekend.

'September Glow',

(Arbutus, Vancouver Island, Thetis Lake)

More of that lovely September light with this piece.
Some of our native Arbutus trees back lit with
warm afternoon sun. The Arbutus is another of
our trees that is found only in very few places
in the world. A broadleaved evergreen, they take on
very unusual growth patterns of twisting trunks,
not unlike Garry oaks in that. The smooth trunks
shed their bark in curling flakes yearly, turning
from a russet red-orange to a creamy yellow-green.
Sometime in August if you happen to be near
one on a real hot day you can hear the bark crackle
as it splits and peels away from the main trunk.
They produce lovely panicles of creamy white
flowers in late spring, so profusely at times
that the glossy dark green leaves are almost
hidden. They will be followed later
by clusters of red berries.
Oil on canvas 9 x 12.

'Evening Ferry' plein air oil Fulford Harbour

I painted this piece from the lookout high on top of
Saltspring Island's Mount Maxwell. We got set up late in the
afternoon and I have to say it was some kind of wonderful!!
This view is looking to the south east and Washington State.
For the most part while we were there it was just us
sharing the view and the scent of soul syrup with the
ravens and the turkey vultures that soared on the updrafts
of the steep cliff face below us, sometimes so close we
could hear the air rushing through their wings!
Can't wait to paint there again!

'The Gap-Thetis Island', Gulf Islands oil painting low tide

Hello everyone,
Well I just got back last night from a short trip to a
neighbouring island and it was really grand.
I did do some painting while I was there and I
will be posting them in the days to come.
This painting was done a couple of months ago from
photo references I took while staying on Thetis Island
several years ago. The "Gap" at one time was merely
an impediment at the highest tides and so travel between
Kupers and Thetis Islands was quite easy on foot.
I think at one time there was even a small bridge
for vehicles to negotiate the narrowest part.
For reasons that are, shall we say, somewhat obscure
it was dredged for "navigation", the bridge no longer
exists. I will leave the real history for others to
write about in another forum.
It is a very magical place at the lowest tides
as depicted here one early morning in late May.
I'm sure there are many stories about this natural
area that had human footprints for
thousands of years before first contact.
Oil on canvas 30 x 36.
